NCIS: Origins premiered this week, and Leroy Jethro Gibbs was back in a very different form. Instead of Mark Harmon playing the iconic role, Austin Stowell plays the character as he first joins NCIS as a probe himself, and starts his career. However, Stowell isn’t the first actor to play a young Gibbs, as Sean Harmon played the character in flashbacks on the main series.

Now, Mark Harmon is explaining why Sean didn’t return to the role in NCIS: Origins.

Why Mark Harmon’s Son Isn’t Gibbs In NCIS: Origins

In the original NCIS series, Mark Harmon’s son, Sean played the character of Gibbs in flashbacks to when he was a young NCIS officer. However, with the new series solely focused on Gibbs’ start at NCIS, the show chose to go with Bridge of Spies actor, Austin Stowell.

Many fans wondered why Sean didn’t get the role, considering his dad was still an executive producer on the series. Mark was asked this exact question, and his answer was simple and to the point. He said that Sean didn’t want the part, and that was that.

He’s an actor, writer, producer, a surfer, he does a lot of things,” Mark said about his son. “You have to come to decisions about what you want to do in life, or what you think’s important. I just think he made a choice and had to make a decision in some ways. He likes executive producing.” (via Variety)

Sean Harmon serves as the executive producer on NCIS: Origins as well as the upcoming Stony Brook, a drama series about a young man struggling with the aftermath of a school shooting.

Who Is On NCIS: Origins?

Instead of Sean Harmon, Austin Stowell takes on the former Mark Harmon role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS: Origins. The series picks up shortly after Gibbs’ wife and daughter are killed, and he joins NCIS, hoping to make a difference.

Stowell’s biggest role came in the Steven Spielberg espionage thriller Bridge of Spies. He also starred in The White Lotus, Three Women, and Catch-22.

Another familiar character returning is Mike Franks, who was Gibbs’ close friend at NCIS, played in the original series by Muse Wilson. However, as with Gibbs, he is younger here and is played by Kyle Schmid. He previously appeared on Big Sky, The Rookie, and Six.

Mark Harmon will remain part of the series. He provides a voiceover for the episodes, similar to how Young Sheldon was formatted. Other cast members include Diany Rodriguez as Vera Strickland, Mariel Molino as Lala Dominguez, Bobby Moynihan as Woody Browne, Lori Petty as Dr. Leonara Friedman, and Robert Taylor as Jackson Gibbs.
