‘Game Of Thrones’ Dragon-Forged Throne Sells For Massive Cash
Fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones recently got a chance to bring of Westeros into their homes. Heritage Auctions recently attracted thousands of fans from around the world selling all sorts of memorabilia from the show. One prominent item involved in the auction was a special throne, which ended up selling for a large sum of money.
A Touring Throne Proved A Hot Item At Auction
In an event lasting from October 10th to the 12th, dubbed “Game of Thrones: The Auction,” Heritage Auctions sold over 900 items from the show. The series drew in over 4,500 bidders from around the globe.
One such item of interest was an “original touring Iron Throne molded from the original screen-used throne.” The bidding for the throne was said to have nearly lasted six minutes until the final big settled at a seven-figure price.
A Heritage Auctions release described the throne as “painted plastic embellished with jewels to look like a dragon-forged chair made of ‘the swords of the vanquished, a thousand of them, melted together like so many candles.'” It also noted it was one of “the all-time photo ops” when it was featured at Heritage’s New York and Dallas galleries.
Ultimately, the throne ended up fetching $1.49 million at the auction. In addition, the release noted, “When it sold, the auction room erupted with applause.”
The event proved to be a success, with the release noting it was “completely sold-out” by the time it ended. Ultimately, the event earned Heritage Auctions $21,115,718.
Showing just how popular Game of Thrones is, even years after airing its final episode, the auction already earned a million dollars after 58 lots. The release also noted 32 lots earned six-figure results.
The Throne Was Just One Of Many Popular Items
The throne was just one of many items sold at the event. The ensemble outfit Jon Snow wore in “Beyond the Wall,” while searching for a Wight, ended up earning $137,500. The outfit came with a version of the Longclaw sword which was gifted to Snow.
Other variations of the Longclaw sword proved especially popular at the auction. A “hero” version of the sword earned $400,000, helping to earn the auction’s “second most expensive lot.” A third “action” version of the sword, made of hard-rubber, also earned $106,250.
Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President, Joe Maddalena noted, “From the moment we launched the Game of Thrones auction in September, it was clear this was going to resonate with everyone.” He continued, “These are extraordinary treasures made by Emmy-winning costume designers and prop makers. Maddalena also noted these artists “worked tirelessly to adapt George R.R. Martin’s wonderful novels.”
“People wanted a piece of that Game of Thrones magic, and we are honored to have been part of what designer Michele Clapton calls these costumes and props’ afterlives. Everyone at Heritage thanks HBO for the opportunity to ride along.”
