More details have been revealed about the death of soap star Drake Hogestyn. The Days of Our Lives actor died on September 28 and many people have been wondering what happened. Now, his official cause of death has been shared. Here is what we know.
Drake Hogestyn Passed Away Peacefully
Drake Hogestyn died on September 28, 2024. It was one day before his 71st birthday.
Drake, who played John Black on DOOL, appeared in more than 4,000 episodes of the soap opera. He made his first appearance on the show in 1986 and was undoubtedly a fan favorite.
His family shared a statement via the Days of Our Lives X accounts the day he died. They wrote, “It’s with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn. He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.”
The statement went on to praise Drake for being an amazing person who was deeply loved by his family. They also mentioned that he “loved performing for the Days audience.” Wrapping up the announcement, they wrote, “We love him and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives.”
Now his official death certificate revealed that he died from pancreatic cancer, but there were several other factors as well. Vomiting, dehydration, and whole-body toxicity were all listed as unfortunate things that contributed to his death.
Days Of Our Lives Costars Pay Tribute To Drake Hogestyn
Several of Drake Hogestyn’s costars on Days also paid tribute to the late actor when the news of his death broke. Allison Sweeney, who acted alongside Drake for nearly 30 years, shared a sweet message about him on Instagram.
She captioned the post, “He was funny, generous and thoughtful. He cared about every single scene, every person. He loved Days, the fans, and shared that passion with everyone on set. My heart breaks for his family, they meant everything to him. He was such a huge part of my life at Days. I will miss him terribly and treasure every story, every joke & every hug.”
Diedre Hall, who played Drake Hogestyn’s love interest Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives, has also shared her thoughts following his death. She sent a statement to Access Hollywood on October 2.
“For nearly 4 decades, Marlena Evans and I have loved the same man,” she said. “Marlena’s John is an iconic hero, unfailingly rescuing her from all matter of villains. My acting partner was incredibly professional from the moment he entered the studio; flawless in his preparation and ready for any eventuality in any scene.”

She went on to talk about how much he loved acting on the soap opera and mentioned his family, claiming that his family and the Yankees were his “two greatest loves.”
