Ethel Kennedy Widow Of Robert F. Kennedy, Dead At 96

Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy and sister-in-law of the late President John F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 96. The news came out days after she had suffered a stroke. Kennedy’s family shared the news, including a cause of death, on social media. Others have also been paying their respect to the late matriarch.

Ethel’s Family Shared The News On X

Joe Kennedy III shared the news on X this Thursday. As he wrote, “It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy.” Joe shared the cause of death: “She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week.”

In the post, Joe praised all that Ethel had done in her life: “Along with a lifetime’s work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly.”

Joe also shared Ethel’s faith: “She was a devout Catholic and a daily communicant, and we are comforted in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; her daughter-in-law Mary; her grandchildren Maeve and Saoirse; and her great-grandchildren Gideon and Josie.” The post finished by reading, “Please keep her in your hearts and prayers.”

As noted by US Magazine, Ethel’s daughter Kerry Kennedy shared news of her mother suffering a stroke this past Tuesday on October 8. At the time she confirmed that Ethel’s family was looking after her.

Before her death, Ethel was the oldest living member of the Kennedy family. She and her late husband, Robert Sr., shared 11 children together.

Ethel’s husband was assassinated during a 1968 presidential run. After his death, she devoted her life to being a human and environmental rights activist. Ethel also notably founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights in 1968. It would later become known as Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights.

Many Shared Their Condolences On Social Media

Since Ethel’s death, many have take to social media to pay their respect. Actor James Woods, for example, wrote, “Like all us I grieved with Ethel Kennedy when our great fellow American, Robert F. Kennedy, was taken by the act of a madman. Her courage and dignity inspired me then, and throughout her lifetime.”

Woods even revealed that he had even once met Ethel. “I was fortunate to have met her in Hyannis Port at a charity event for the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation for Justice and Human Rights. She was gracious, welcoming, and brilliant.”

Many shared photos and videos of Ethel to honor her memory. Paul A. Szypu, for example, shared a clip of the matriarch’s wedding video.
