‘Jeopardy’ Contestant Reveals He Cost Wife Chance On Show
A fan-favorite Jeopardy! contestant recently talked about a surprising connection between his wife and the series. As he revealed, she could have been on the show multiple times. In fact, he’s also to blame for her no longer being eligible as a contestant.
A Fan-Favorite Contestant’s Wife Aced The Online Audition Four Times
Sam Buttrey has made a name for himself as a Jeopardy! contestant. Becoming the 2021 Professors Tournament champion, he went on to compete in the 2022 Tournament of Champions.
Over the years, Buttrey has become something of a fan-favorite, due to his charisma and resemblance to actor Steve Martin. In fact, he recently became a co-host on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast alongside producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss.
During a recent episode, Buttrey revealed that his wife, Elinda Hardy, had also come close to appearing on the show. In fact, she apparently passed the online audition four times.
Buttrey’s New Job Cost His Wife Her Latest Appearance
Hardy was even invited to appear on the show’s current season. However, Buttrey accidentally cost her the chance by taking his job on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, making her ineligible.
Buttrey added that, “What’s fun about that is we are strong in different areas.” He continued “As a couple, we are particularly good at Jeopardy!. My wife made it into the pool three times and was invited to come on a fourth time but I’m pretty sure she’s not eligible right now.”

The Tournament of Champions finalist assured listeners that his wife didn’t resent him over the issue. As he put it, “My wife is bitter about so much I do but this is no one of those causes. My wife is a lovely person.”
Foss thanked Hardy for “sacrificing her potential Jeopardy! success so that he could be a part of our podcast.” Buttrey followed with, “In all sincerity I thank her too.”
While hosts are another story, being married to a contestant doesn’t automatically cost a possible player their eligibility. In fact, a recent contestant, Ryan Manton, revealed his wife Lauren had competed on the show before him. Buttrey has also compared himself to Manton in this regard.
As noted by TV Insider, Buttrey confirmed he is barred from competing himself thanks to his hosting new duties. “I think, you know, the time has come to, as you say, hang up the buzzer. If the cost of being here with you guys and focusing on the game is retirement, sure, I’m all for it.”
