Jeopardy! fans seemed to be cheering for Ryan Manton to get his fifth win to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. However, Ryan fell short by one win and lost in his fifth game. What is even more shocking is that Ryan lost by a big score to an “aggressive” opponent.

Here is what you need to know about Ryan’s loss and what is next.

Ryan Manton Loses Big In Fifth Jeopardy! Game

Ryan Manton was one win away from automatically qualifying for the Tournament of Champions. It takes just five wins to make the tournament. Ryan had won four matches. All four of his wins were mostly comfortable, and he didn’t even need to worry about Final Jeopardy! in most of them.

However, the fifth game was very different. Ryan lost big to an “aggressive opponent.” Mark Fitzpatrick, a content manager from Connecticut, won over Mark and ended the champion’s win streak at four games. The third player was Anne Singleton, an executive director from Massachusetts.

Mark was aggressive from the start, as he went all in on the Daily Double and lost $2,400. Ryan was winning big at that time, but Mark chipped away and came back as the game wore on. Mark got the second Daily Double right and added $3,000 to his total.

Mark got the third Daily Double as well and added $5,000 to his total. He went into Final Jeopardy! with $23,400 thanks to his Daily Doubles. He would be hard to catch, although Ryan had $15,200 and Anne had $10,200.

How Did Ryan Manton Lose In The Final Jeopardy! Round?

The Final Jeopardy! clue was about Literary Characters. “A fragment from a nautical tool found on a Chilean island in 2005 was likely left by the Scot who partly inspired this character.”

The answer to that clue is “Who is Robinson Crusoe?” However, no one knew this answer except Mark. Ryan missed it and finished with $9,999. Anne missed it and finished with $5,000. However, Mark got it right and finished with a one-day total of $30,401.

Fans swept into social media to talk about the big loss for Ryan.

  • “Anne and especially Mark made it a game while Ryan stayed competitive despite Mark finding all the DDs”
  • “Really amazing performance by Mark. It is tough to come back from 0 after getting a DD wrong, but his aggressive wager on the final DD paid off tremendously.”
  • “it’s surprising that he was the only one to get FJ correct. How many books are about surviving on an island?”

While Ryan Manton lost, he could still get into the Tournament of Champions. If there are not enough automatic qualifiers, the show will invite players who did well but fell a little short.
