‘Sister Wives’ What Fueled Rift Between Kody Brown & Maddie?
Sister Wives fans know that Kody Brown is estranged from many of his children, including Maddie Brush. In earlier seasons, Maddie and her father seemed incredibly close. He played a very active role in her wedding and bonded with her husband, Caleb Brush.
Caleb and Maddie also gave Kody and Janelle their first grandchildren. But over time, the father/daughter relationship seems to have broken down and crumbled apart.
What exactly fueled this rift in the first place?
Kody Brown & Maddie Brush Don’t Have Much Of A Relationship Now
Onscreen, Janelle Brown says most of her children really resent their dad and harbor difficult feelings toward him. Garrison and Gabriel’s feud with their father was explored onscreen. But Janelle’s daughter Maddie also feels estranged from her father now.
“Kody really did kind of cut off communication with Caleb and Maddie when the family started to really dissolve, and the kids really don’t know who he is. He’s not been out to visit. He doesn’t call,” Janelle admitted during Sister Wives Season 19.
During the season, Kody also asserted he didn’t want to talk about Maddie. However, he did contradict the rest of the family and insisted Maddie cut contact with him first.
“To be honest with you, I didn’t really cut off communications with Madison,” the family patriarch said during a confessional. “She cut it off with me. Every time I talked to her, it was a fish for gossip and I got tired of it.“
Many Sister Wives fans also believe that Maddie’s relationship with Kody worsened after Garrison’s death.
The Brushes Prepare To Welcome A Fourth Child
Recently, Maddie Brush shared on Instagram that she’s expecting another baby. While it’s delightful news, many Sister Wives fans can’t help but wonder if Kody Brown will be involved in her children’s lives at all.

Right now, the Brush family’s children are 7, 5, and 1. Maddie and her father haven’t had regular contact in quite some time, especially because of the physical distance between them. It’s possible Maddie’s oldest child, Axel, remembers his grandfather. But otherwise, her children likely haven’t had any interaction with him at all.
It’s too soon to say what might happen with Kody and Maddie’s future together. But after all this time, many fans aren’t hopeful they’ll mend fences anytime soon.
