D.A. Reveals Shocking New Evidence In Menendez Bros Case
Prosecutors in Los Angeles have revealed that they are reviewing new evidence in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez. Attorneys for the brothers have asked the court to vacate their conviction. While Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon said there is no doubt they committed the murders of their parents, resentencing may be necessary with new evidence coming to light. Here is everything that has been revealed so far.
Los Angeles District Attorney Reveals New Evidence
Erik and Lyle Menendez are serving life sentences for killing their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion over 35 years ago. As mentioned above, it is known that the brothers killed their parents. However, the DA’s office will be reviewing the new information to see if it warrants a resentencing.
“We have not decided on an outcome. We are reviewing information,” George Gascon said during a news conference.
The new evidence that has come to light includes a letter written by Erik that allegedly proves he was sexually abused by his father. The LA District Attorney believes that, if this is true, he believes that the case would be approached with more sensitivity than it was in 1993 when they were on trial.
George Gascon and his team at the DA’s office are going to evaluate all of the new evidence. Under George’s tenure in office as the District Attorney, 300 people have been resentenced. Only four of these individuals went on to commit another crime.
That said, Cliff Gardner, an attorney for the Menendez brothers, has expressed that he’s pleased with the DA’s decision to evaluate the new evidence.
“Given today’s very different understanding of how sexual and physical abuse impacts children — both boys and girls — and the remarkable new evidence, we think resentencing is the appropriate result,” the attorney said in an email. “The brothers have served more than 30 years in prison. That is enough.”
The Menendez Brothers’ Story Gained New Attention, Thanks To Netflix Doc
The Menendez brothers’ story has gained traction in recent weeks due to a new Netflix documentary about them. It is called Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
Erik Menendez‘s wife shared a statement from him on X following the release of the documentary. In it, Erik said that the show was a “dishonest portrayal” of what really happened. He also said that it has taken them back to when the prosecution “built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experience rape trauma differently from women.”
At the time of their parents’ murders, Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18. The brothers admitted they shot their mother and father, Kitty and Jose Menendez. They alleged that they were afraid for their lives, believing that their parents were going to kill them to stop them from exposing their dad’s molestation of Erik.
Prosecutors painted a different picture, accusing the brothers of killing their parents for their multimillion-dollar estate.
A hearing to go over the new evidence has been scheduled for November 29.
