‘Saturday Night Live’ Releases Cut Jelly Roll Sketch
Jelly Roll served as the musical guest of Saturday Night Live‘s 50th season opener. In addition to showcasing his music on the show, he also participated in a sketch that was cut for time. However, the sequence has now been uploaded online.
Westeros Had A Few Surprise Guests
Jean Smart, arguably best known for Designing Women, notably served as the episode’s guest host. She also appeared in the cut skit with Jelly Roll, which was later uploaded onto Saturday Night Live‘s official YouTube account.
The skit opens up with four friends ready to watch the return of their favorite show and the skit’s namesake, “Blonde Dragon People,” a parody of House of the Dragon. Even after watching a brief scene, the friends have trouble following along with the story.
In particular, the friends are confused by the characters’ esoteric names. This causes one to quip at least Game of Thrones had one character named “Jon,” referring to Jon Snow. There are also comments on the fictional show’s continuity, such as whether dragons come from eggs or seeds. Even the special effects fail to impress, with stock footage of a bat used to represent a dragon.
Adding to the confusion, Jelly Roll and Andy Samberg appear as Samwise Gamgee and Legolas from Lord of the Rings, respectively. Smart also notably appeared in the sketch as “child queen” Dargos. Even her character seemed gradually confused by what’s going on with the show.
Jelly Roll’s Music Still Impressed Fans
When Jelly Roll and Samberg’s characters ask her what show this is, she responds, “This is the House of Game of the Dragon or whatever.” She also explains to the visiting characters that “your show is on Amazon Prime.”
The characters themselves admit they are not entirely sure what streaming platform they are currently on. However, they still take pride in that, despite this, the apps probably won’t be deleted for years to come.
The sketch ends with the twist that the brief scene was an entire season of the show. Looking it up on her phone, of the friends realizes the next season won’t air until 2028, causing her to compare the situation to the Olympics.
Jelly Roll, born Jason Bradley DeFord, is a rapper and singer. He first rose to mainstream fame with the singles “Son of a Sinner” and “Need a Favor.” While his sketch was cut for time, Jelly Roll still got to perform his songs “Liar” and “Winning Streak.”
As noted by American Songwriter, fans were quick to praise Jelly Roll on the series. On the YouTube upload of his performance of “Winning Streak” on SNL, one user wrote, “Jelly Roll is a real man. NOT polished/fake and sings about every man’s issue. I am glad SNL has introduced him to maybe a new segment of the public.”
