Sabrina Carpenter Reimagines ’90s Classic With Original Singer
Sabrina Carpenter has joined forces with a ’90s pop idol in honor of the latter’s debut album’s 25th anniversary. A video released on the ’90s singer’s YouTube Channel showcases all sorts of reimaginings of her famous song. Carpenter herself also commented on how the star has influenced her. So, what did she have to say? Details here.
An Idol Performed A Variety OF Her ’90s Classics
It has been 25 years since Christina Aguilera released her debut album. Now, the blonde bombshell with the dynamic pipes has released a tribute to her self-titled album filmed at the Spotify Music Studios in Los Angeles, California. Aguilera opened up the video with a soulful reimagining of “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).” She then followed this up with a rendition of “Genie In A Bottle.” Throughout, she was surrounded by accompanying musicians and backup singers.
However, Aguilera had a few guests, too. Introduced as an “extremely special” guest, the singer welcomed Sabrina Carpenter onto the set. After a brief conversation, Carpenter was invited to sing a rendition of Aguilera’s song, “What a Girl Wants.” The song soon became a duet, with Aguilera taking over the second verse.
Aguilera finished up the video singing a rendition of “Reflection” from Disney’s animated film, Mulan. Back when she was 17, the singer had previously recorded a version of the song as her debut single. Helping to establish her singing career, a music video featuring Aguilera was included in the Mulan DVD. Notably, she would later re-record the song for Mulan‘s live-action adaptation.
Carpenter Shared What An Inspiration The Singer Had Been For Her
Before Carpenter started singing, she also got to briefly sit and chat with Aguilera. During this, Carpenter shared what an influence Aguilera was to her. In fact, one of Aguilera’s earliest performances left such an impression on Carpenter. As she explained, “I think the first time I ever heard your voice was [when] my mom played me a video of you singing at eight years old, ‘A Sunday Kind of Love’.”
People noted that this was likely in reference to Aguilera performing a cover of Etta James on a 1990 episode of Star Search. Carpenter added, “That was the most inspiring thing for me ever to see as a young girl that wanted to sing but just didn’t think I could do it at that age.” In addition, Aguilera and Carpenter also appeared in a video together on Aguilera’s Instagram account. In the video, Carpenter mimicked audio of Kylie Jenner saying, “I’m obsessed with my mom,” while referring to Aguilera. For her part, Aguilera also captioned the post with “Obsessed.”

Over the years, Aguilera has worn many hats in the industry. In the early 2010s, she became known for several collaborations, such as “Moves Like Jagger” and “Feel This Moment.” She was also one of the first coaches on the competition series, The Voice, Initially appearing for the first three seasons, she returned to the role for the fifth, eighth, and tenth seasons.
