Golden Bachelorette Star Says Aging Is ‘Very Different’ These Days
Most reality shows focus on young people in their 20s or 30s, but the Bachelor franchise knew there was an untapped market in the older generation. They launched a senior citizen version of ABC’s popular dating show in 2023. Gerry Turner, 72, was the franchise’s first Golden Bachelor. Millions of viewers tuned in to watch him propose and later marry contestant Theresa Nist, 70.
Unfortunately, their marriage ended after just a few months. However, ABC went ahead with plans for a female-led Golden Bachelorette spinoff. They chose one of Gerry’s contestants, Joan Vassos, to lead the first season. The season kicked off on September 18.
Joan is a 61-year-old school administrator from Maryland looking to find the second great love of her life after losing her husband of over 30 years to cancer in 2021.
She told CNN in May that the perception of aging and being old is changing. “Growing old now is very different. We were all very fit, we exercised, we shared great stories about raising our kids and we learned so much from each other. There’s a lot of knowledge that we have inside of us because we’ve lived life,” she said.
The ABC reality star added, “In our culture, I feel like growing old is not a dignified thing. You’re just supposed to kind of fade in the back, take a backseat to the next generation. I’m hoping that we change that a little bit.”

Joan Vassos may embrace aging, but does that mean she hasn’t had a little nip/tuck here and there? She previously confessed to biyearly Opus fractional laser treatments to reduce “tiny lines” on her face and lightens her “freckles and discoloration.”
Reza Nassab, a consultant plastic surgeon at CLNQ Clinic, told Express that Joan Vassos’ regimen likely goes beyond that. The plastic surgeon praised the Golden Bachelorette‘s appearance. “Joan’s appearance and new fresh profile are very sharp and refreshing. She looks full of energy, healthy, confident and ready for a great season, with little tweaks aesthetically pleasing angles can be enhanced and improved subtlety.”
However, he added, “Subtle aesthetic treatments can include Morpheus8, Micro-needling, dermal fillers, tweakments and more to improve and brighten your complexion.”

I think whatever she has, or has not done, she i Stunning. I would like a filler in her upper lip, it kind of sinks in. Why not get a little something done, you are on TV? She is Great, she has a beautiful figure, a great personality and the men all really like her. I don’t know many 61 year olds that look like her!
Although she is beautiful woman, watching her talk with a stiff upper lip and a wide mouth looks very unnatural.

Absolutely she’s had some work done and heck if I were in her shoes you bet I would too! She’s beautiful regardless and I’m certain she was equally just as beautiful before anything was done. Stunning, gracefully, positive, kind and perhaps the best Bachelorette since Trisha. I’ve been a fan for years and stopped watching for a bit due to the poor casting and bad producing. However this new set of Golden Bachelor & Golden Bachelorette have bought the show back to center and dignity. How about the younger Bachelor & Bachelorette read some lessons from these older men and women about how to treat one another. Stop with the pettiness, and enjoy life together for the good of all whether it be brotherhood or sisterhood learn something from these seniors about how to treat each other. You show would triple its fans base guaranteed!!

She has had plenty of plastic surgery. Pictures of Joan when she first married her husband had been shown on the first episode. She looks much better now than when she was young and newly married.
Yes, you can definitely tell that she has had plastic surgery. Her face is pretty, but it looks artificial. When they show side views of her it doesn’t look natural. She certainly doesn’t need any more plastic surgery. She’s had enough. She is a very nice sweet and thoughtful woman. She probably didn’t need as much done to her face as she was convinced to get, as she was already attractive.

Beautiful figure & also looks as though she has had a breast augmentation. And if Joan has gone that route & makes her feel better, more power to her.
I actually think she looks older than her age. She looks like she’s had skin damage and has had cosmetic surgery to her face. Looks very unnatural. it appears she also has hair extensions and breast implants. She just appears fake all over. Cameras can make one look better so I can just imagine what she looks like in person.

The first time I saw her I knew she had plastic surgery. That’s fine if she chooses to do that, but she does not represent the average 60-something woman at all. For this reason, I have not and will not watch this program.
I don’t know how old you are but you can only hope to look as good at 61. And that’s really a good reason not to watch the show. You’re as fake and judgmental as you say she looks.
I definitely believe she has had plastic surgery. Why can’t people just age naturally and embrace their lines and wrinkles. We earned them. I can’t believe people go to this extent on national television. 😔

Because she was going to be on a tv show and would be facing the scrutinization and derogatory comments she is now. Not everyone is naturally confident – if you are, you’re probably kidding yourself. Maybe she DID need these thing done to make her feel more confident. Its the teenagers now who make us feel like we aren’t worthy and aren’t good enough when we age. Just you wait.
Although Joan is, undoubtedly, a lovely person who says displays many sought after qualities, she often comes across as chilly and facially expressionless. In my opinion, she doesn’t exactly exude warmth. In addition, though verbalizing her continued grief over the loss of her late husband and feelings of guilt at the prospect of moving on with her life are understandable, to repeatedly bring up
those topics up on virtually every date with her suitors seems excessive. How could that not taint every date/discussion when the men are trying to be considered by her as a potential partner? Lastly, I can’t help but wonder how many of these handsome, accomplished men would, in an everyday life situation, be seeking out a woman of her age? I realize that my comment is based on the sad reality that most older, vibrant men of this caliber prefer significantly younger women. Are they truly all that taken with Joan or are they merely being caught up in the competitive nature of the show?
Joan definitely has had plastic surgery. Her face is very taut and angular. The area around her mouth and chin is stiff and hardly moves when she talks. Joan is also extremely thin for her age. I don’t feel like she is representative of most women in her age group. She seems like a sincere and caring person, but her physical appearance is fake looking. What is wrong with just aging naturally!
Whether she’s had plastic surgery or not, she’s a beautiful lady on the inside and out. Wishing her only happiness and a second chance at love in this new chapter of her life 🙂
