“I’m from New York. My dad wanted all boys. He got all girls, so I was the tomboy,” Sue said in the clip. “People should be excited to see me play. Especially my generation, because I’m hoping a lot of them will maybe see themselves in me… Life’s too short and it’s too precious, and life is what you make of it.”

That is when she told the story of her daughter: “I had a daughter at a younger age, and she’s had a son at a younger age, so I’m actually a grandma.” She then said her daughter, Chelsea, was a type 1 juvenile diabetic. Her daughter is also a “super fan” of Survivor.

How DId Jeff Probst Help Sue’s Daughter?

“My daughter watched the very first episode with me,” Sue explained. “She was seven years old. Life happened, my daughter started getting sick. She ended up being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, but at the time, we didn’t know.”

Sue said the times were tough and they struggled with Chelsea’s health. However, she said there was one show they could watch together that gave them comfort in the tough times. “The only thing that was a good thing around that time were the times that Jeff came into our freakin’ living room and took us away from our reality, just for a brief moment,” Sue said.

Sue said that watching Jeff Probst and Survivor took them out of their “horrifying life” when they didn’t know what was happening to Chelsea. “That was even more important for me to do this, sort of for her, to show her,” Sue explained. “And she can live vicariously through me.”

Sue Smey is part of the Tuku tribe, and she told her story while she was washing the challenge mud off her after the opening competition.
