Keith Urban Supports Carrie Underwood’s ‘Idol’ Return
It’s been announced that Carrie Underwood will make her long-awaited American Idol return, and one fellow country music icon is already rooting for her.
Keith Urban Shows His Support
Nearly 20 seasons after Carrie took home her win on American Idol, she will return to the series for Season 24.
She will be graduating from a former contestant to now being a judge, reviewing and encouraging a new generation of music artists. Underwood is the replacement of Katy Perry, who recently stepped down.
Before she makes her judge debut next year, none other than Keith Urban decided to publicly back her new role.
“She’s gonna be great,” he said. “She’s a great call for that position, she’s gonna do excellent.”
It’s no surprise that Keith would show his support for her. The two have been friends for years and collaborated on their 2016 debut ‘The Fighter’.
Keith’s Singing Show History
When it comes to American Idol, Keith should know who is and isn’t a good fit to be a judge on the show. Mainly, because he was a judge himself.
Urban was a judge on the series from Season 12 through Season 15. Years later, he made his return to the show in Season 21 as both a guest mentor and a performer in the finale.
Not only does his long music career prove that he was a good pick for the role, but he actually has experience on a singing competition show.
“When I was 9 years old, I went on a show called Pot of Gold,” Keith revealed. “Three judges, went out there and sang and was completely crucified, and welcome to showbiz kid.”
Before American Idol, Keith was also a coach on The Voice Australia for several years.
Fans Want Keith Back On The Voice
Speaking of The Voice, ever since Keith left the Australian spin-off a while ago, his fans have been hoping that he would consider coaching on the US series.
In Season 15, Urban was brought on as an advisor on for Blake Shelton‘s team. And that made several viewers want him to stay on the show on a more consistent basis.
In a Reddit thread, fans agreed that they want the country star to become a coach again. Here are a few of the comments:
- “He’s great at it and the show badly needs someone like him who gives such helpful feedback and can also rock out.”
- “I liked his rehearsal feedback a lot. He seems to be really big on authenticity, which is important in a show like this.”
- “I mean he just left the voice aus a few seasons ago, so it’s always possible.”
Keith hasn’t publicly revealed whether or not he plans to return to The Voice, or singing competition shows in general for that matter.
