‘Young & Restless’ Why Sharon Case Thought She Was Fired
On September 14, 1994, Young & Restless fans met the real Sharon for the first time. Sharon Case, who plays Sharon Newman on the daytime soap, made her debut 30 years ago. Now, many viewers may have forgotten that she wasn’t the first person to play the role and, at one time, she was afraid she wouldn’t be the last. Keep reading to see what Sharon Case had to say about the last 30 years on Y&R.
Casting Sharon Newman Was A Challenge
Monica Potter was the first person to play Sharon on Young & Restless. She went on to star in NBC’s Parenthood. However, she acknowledged that she wasn’t good on the soap.
“I was fired because I was terrible,” Monnica told Craig Ferguson on The Late Show in 2010. Then, she was replaced by Heidi Mark. Heidi is best known as Playboy‘s Miss July 1995. She was also married to Vince Neil from Motley Crue. Heidi went down as one of daytime television’s worst recasts of all time and only lasted two months on the soap.
That’s when Young & Restless producers discovered Sharon Case. She’d already been working on becoming a soap opera star. She was the second of four actresses to play Monica Quartermaine’s daughter Dawn Winthrop on General Hospital. She also appeared on As The World Turns as Debbie Simon.
When she finally rose to stardom was on Young & Restless. Sharon didn’t think she’d last long on the soap. After all, no one else was able to fulfill the role. “I mean, I hoped,” she told Soaps.com. “I thought the character of Nick Newman, being the son of Victor and Nikki, could go [for all these years]. But I didn’t even know if that would happen. It’s not necessarily how these things work.”
Every time Sharon and Nick went through a rough time on the show, the actress was concerned about her job security. The Emmy winner said, “Actors think that [they’re getting cut] every single day, no matter what happens. Like, somebody breaks a nail, and you think, ‘That’s it, I’m getting fired!’”
She continued, “You’re always just hoping for the best. My viewpoint was to just do my best at all times, then no matter what happens, you don’t have any regrets. You can’t have any!”
Young & Restless Has Shaped Sharon Case’s Career
After 30 years, Sharon is thankful for everything that Young & Restless has done for her career. “I’ve really grown as an actress from playing Sharon for so long and playing so many different sides to her,” she said. “I couldn’t say I always felt this way throughout the years, but I do now feel like I could play anything. I wouldn’t have said that before.”
The actress continued, saying that playing Sharon Newman has allows her to “push and push” her performance. “I thought, ‘Well, you know, every actor has their sort of sphere, their genre that they can play in, and that’s what they’re capable of doing,’” she continues. “But I don’t really think that of myself anymore.”
