Jennie Garth is slamming the Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot, and even her part in the series. The OG 90210 aired for ten seasons from 1990 to 2000 where Jennie played Kelly Taylor. Yet, she also participated in the  2000s reboot which featured several up-and-coming actors. Now, she is speaking out against the show in its entirety including her return as Kelly. Keep reading for more on what she had to say.

Beverly Hills, 90210 defined a generation and the nineties as a while. Brenda and Brandon Walsh were twins from Minnesota who transplanted to Beverly Hills, feeling so out of place at West Beverly High. They soon bonded with the popular kids and went through all the trials and tribulations of being teens. Viewers watched them graduate, head off to college, graduate again, and try their hands in the real world. After a decade, the show ended with a lavish wedding and they sailed off into the sunset.

The show was always a fan favorite so it was rebooted in 2008. It returned with a whole new group of teens and was rebranded 90210. Jennie Garth, who had played Kelly Taylor, came back as a link to the new cast as her character’s little sister, Erin Silver was a student at West Beverly. She was also the school’s guidance counselor, going from student to employee. The show lasted just five seasons and Jennie seemed more than happy as she regrets ever signing on for it. According to People, she shared her thoughts about reprising her role.

Jennie Garth recently attended 90s Con Florida on Saturday, September 14th, and did a panel with her former co-stars. Brian Austin Green, who played Jennie’s stepbrother, David Silver, liked the idea of the new show. However, it was not Jennie’s cup of tea and she has no problem explaining why she did it in the first place:

“I wish I hadn’t done it. No offense to them. The producer was a friend of a friend, and I remember he came over in my living room, sat me down, [billed it as] this chance of a lifetime. He asked me to do it and I didn’t know how to say no then. But the people were very nice and all the best to them.”

Gabrielle Carteris, who played Andrea Zuckerman, shared she had no interest in it:

“I never wanted to [do it]. I was so shocked they were doing a new show. I was like, is it like, they long so much you’re just going to try to reinvent it over and over?”

The Ones Who Tried

Out of the entire cast, the only ones who tried out 90210 were Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, and the late Shannen Doherty. Brian Austin Green, though he did like the idea, did not understand why anyone would return:

“No offense at all, it’s to me, we did 10 years of that show and it’s like okay, done.”

In a twist, the cast did reunite to do BH90210 in 2019 for a dramatized version of who they are and it was hit or miss. Ian Ziering, who played Steve Sanders, felt it was what fans needed and wanted at the time:

“I was pretty much the only outspoken person saying I think we should give the audience what they want: comfort food.”

They do think that it was a “full circle moment” for all of them and now they have had the opportunity to share their stories through these 90s cons. Sadly, Shannen Doherty passed in July 2024 so she has not been able to enjoy the fandom. Yet, her booth has become a memorial to her which is beautiful.
