Hockey Player Tries To Buy Drugs At 2024 Paris Olympics
In some shocking news, an athlete who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics was suspended by his home country for a year. It turns out that he tried to buy cocaine at the Olympics after his team’s elimination. The suspension will include all competitions for his country through next September.
Here is what you need to know about the incident and punishment.
Field Hockey Player Tries To Buy Drugs At Olympics
Hockey Australia announced on Wednesday that they suspended field hockey player Tom Craig for a year. According to the organization, he tried to buy cocaine at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The suspension prevents Craig, 29, from playing in any match, competition, or event at any level sanctioned or organized by Hockey Australia, including leagues. As part of his sanction, Craig must also attend mandatory training and education programs.
Six months of the suspension will be served in full. The other six months depend on completing tasks and behavioral requirements.
“Tom has had access to all of the athlete support services under our program and he will continue to do so throughout his suspension,” Hockey Australia said in a statement (via Us Magazine).
According to reports, law enforcement officials witnessed a “cocaine transaction” in Paris’ 9th arrondissement on August 6. This was after Australia lost to the Netherlands in the Olympic field hockey quarterfinals. Craig was not charged with a crime because of the small amount of narcotics involved. A judge gave him a warning.
“I’d firstly like to apologize for what has occurred in the last 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake. I take full responsibility for my actions,” Craig said after his arrest.
Australia Had It Tough At The Paris Olympics
While Tom Craig’s arrest was a black eye on the Australian Olympic teams, it wasn’t the only time they were in the news at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While this was the worst news for them, they also had one of the most talked about Olympic performances, but it wasn’t for the right reasons.
Australia won 53 medals, including 18 gold, 19 silver, and 16 bronze. However, while its field hockey team never made it past the quarterfinals, its breakdancing competitor didn’t even earn a single point.
Australia’s B-girl, Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, competed in a breakdancing round-robin battle and scored zero points from the judges. Their B-Boy competitor, Jeffrey Dan Arpie, also didn’t advance, but he at least scored two votes. For Raygun, she ended up as a meme rather than a legitimate Olympian.
Jimmy Kimmel even had a sketch mocking her performance on his late-night talk show.
