Following the premiere on September 5, Netflix’s The Perfect Couple was all anyone could talk about. What started out as praise for the Nicole Kidman-led whodunit quickly turned to hate as fans blasted the series’ six-episode ending.

The Perfect Couple Ends With A Controversial Shocking Twist

WARNING! MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Perfect Couple is the story of the Winbury family, who are rich, “kill someone and get away with it rich,” to be exact.

Nicole stars as Greer Garrison Winbury and Liev Schreiber is her husband, Tag Winbury.

The story centers around their son, Benji Winbury’s (Billy Howle), wedding to Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson).

As the rehearsal dinner occurs, secrets come to light, including affairs and money troubles, leading to a murder where everyone involved is a suspect.

Based on a book by Elin Hilderbrand, multiple changes were made to the original story, including that controversial ending.

After learning that Amelia’s best friend, Merritt (Meghann Fahy), is pregnant with her father-in-law to-be’s child, Thomas’ (Jack Reynor) money-hungry pregnant wife Abigail (Dakota Fanning) drugs and drowns Merritt in order to gain access to her husband’s trust fund sooner, rather than later.

Some Fans Consider The Perfect Couple Ending ‘Rushed’

In the book, the drowning is ruled an accident by authorities, and there’s no direct killer.

Greer is the only one who solves the mystery, and she decides to keep it to herself.

Some disgruntled fans thought the show should have kept the original ending, while others thought it seemed “rushed,” and perhaps more episodes would have helped.

“Just finished The Perfect Couple… Even when it was more exciting and mysterious than the book… I would’ve loved they would have kept the book ending… It was way better,” one person shared on X.

Another questioned, “The Perfect Couple was soo close to be amazing, why did they rush the ending like that?”

Other fans praised the show, especially the performances of the female stars.

“Really like how basic #ThePerfectCouple is. Nice, straightforward story. Everything is expected and not expected at the same time. Also Nicole Kidman is def born to play a rich, powerful mum with secrets. Perfect casting,” one fan commented.

While another asked, “What did we do to deserve Meghann Fahy?”

“#ThePerfectCouple is bonkers in the best way – Dakota Fanning, in particular, has nailed a woman every single person in their thirties knows deeply well,” a third declared.
