Bruce Springsteen’s Wife Patti Scialfa Reveals Cancer Diagnosis
Patti Scialfa, who is married to musician Bruce Springsteen, has opened up about receiving a cancer diagnosis. Although she was officially diagnosed years ago, she only recently decided to back away from the stage and take care of herself. Keep reading to see what she revealed about her experience.
Patti Scialfa Reveals Blood Cancer Diagnosis
Bruce Springsteen is best known as the lead singer of E Street Band. His wife, Patti Scialfa, is also a member of the band. The couple has been on stage together since 1984 and married since 1991.
Bruce’s other half has been notably missing from recent E Street Band performances. The band kicked off a world tour in February 2023, but Patti decided to take a step back from performing late last year. She admitted that her health had something to do with her decision.
The guitarist revealed that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in 2018. She opened up about her diagnosis in the new documentary Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend.
Bruce Springsteen’s Wife Steps Away From The Stage
In October 2023, she shared that she was not going to be performing on several dates of the band’s tour to work on a solo album. She was also looking forward to spending some time with her first grandchild. Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa became first-time grandparents to Lily Harper Springsteen in July 2022.
At the time, she said that she didn’t feel her presence on the stage was bringing anything special to the performance. She stated that she felt the band was “completely intact” without her there.
“And the main thing was I have a record that I couldn’t have finished when Bruce was home because he’s in the studio all the time. So I took that opportunity to do my record,” she continued.
However, Patti said that her medical condition was the reason behind her decision to take a break from being on stage.
“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she shared in the new documentary. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”
Bruce Springsteen has been facing some medical problems of his own. In September 2023, he postponed several of his tour dates after being diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease. Then, in May 2024, he put off a few more shows on doctor’s orders due to “vocal issues.”
Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will make its debut on Hulu and Disney+ on October 25.
