‘Blue Bloods’ Showrunner Describes Series Finale
Blue Bloods is coming to an end with the upcoming season. While neither the fans nor the cast are ready for it to end, the showrunners didn’t have a choice. The network canceled the show, and no one could stop it. However, that doesn’t mean that the writers are not trying to make the finale one that fans will love.
Here is what showrunner Kevin Wade said about creating the Blue Bloods finale.
Blue Bloods Series Finale To Be Iconic?
There are series finales that have ruined beloved shows, and there are also series finales that remain iconic and beloved even after the series ends. Blue Bloods fans want a finale that falls into the latter group. In the past, some finales disappointed fans, such as Lost, Seinfeld, and The Sopranos.
That is why Kevin Wade said he started studying series finales before working on the last Blue Bloods episode. He wanted to see what worked in some finales and what might not have worked. This allowed him to determine what he wanted to do to ensure that his show ended on a high note.
“I’ve thought about it a lot, along with my colleagues,” Wade, 70, said. “I rewatched the series finales of great shows, going back to M*A*S*H and Cheers and Mary Tyler Moore, and certainly The Sopranos.”
He said he wanted to see what they had in common. He learned that if they did a great show, it gravitated to a moment where, in the end, it made sure to let fans know it was the last show.
The Different Series Finales Blue Bloods Will Contend With
Just looking at the series finales that Kevin Wade watched, there are some great ones. The M*A*S*H series finale was “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen,” a two-hour finale. It was the most-watched single episode of any television series in U.S. history. The series showed the final days of the Korean War and how it affected the doctors at the 4077.
The Cheers series finale was “One for the Road,” and it saw Diane (Shelley Long) return after six years to consider reuniting with Sam Malone (Ted Danson). The final scene has Sam looking at his empty bar and heading into the back.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show series finale is “The Last Show” and sees every major character fired from the news show they worked for. The series ends with them filming their last news show and then saying goodbye before Mary turns out the lights one last time and leaves.
As for The Sopranos, that was the one series finale that many people weren’t happy with. In the finale, Tony and his family sat down at the diner for a meal. It was tense as people came in and out, and many fans expected Tony to die. However, the series ended with the screen going black and silent and never coming back.
Many viewers called their television providers, thinking the network went out before the finale. However, that was the end. When asked later, creator David Chase said that Tony was killed then. Since the show was from his point of view, he didn’t see his death coming, so the audience didn’t see it either.
It will be up to fans to decide if the Blue Bloods finale fits into the category of a satisfying conclusion. The final season continues on October 18, and the series finale will air on December 13, 2024. By the end, the show will have made 293 episodes over 14 seasons.
