Ryan Lochte

Ryan Lochte is one of the most decorated swimmers ever. Recently, he got real about his recovery after nearly losing his life in a car wreck. So, what did he have to say?

Ryan Lochte Is One Of The Most Successful Swimmers Ever

When it comes to American swimming, everyone knows Michael Phelps. In fact, Phelps is considered the GOAT when it comes to Olympic swimming. However, even though he may not have as high a profile as Phelps, Ryan Lochte is right up there among the best Olympic swimmers to ever do it.

Lochte put his body through the wringer over the course of years to make himself into the perfect swimming machine. This includes facing all sorts of injuries and setbacks over the course of his competitive swimming life. However, he went through something else entirely when a car crash last fall nearly took his life.

Olympic Swimmer Nearly Lost His Life In Car Wreck

According to Ryan Lochte, this was a “near-death experience.” Lochte was driving in Florida to pick up his children on November 21 when the car in front of him suddenly pulled out of the lane to avoid a trash truck that was stopped.

While the car in front of him managed to avoid this, Ryan was not so lucky. The impact alone crumped the front of Lochte’s vehicle, and that was only the beginning of his woes.

The swimmer was rushed immediately into surgery. Even though he survived the initial wreck, he was in for a long and grueling recovery process. Lochte may have had his share of injuries while swimming, but, this was an entirely different beast.

Ryan Lochte Opens Up About Recovery And More

Ryan Lochte opened up to PEOPLE recently, saying: ““I could have died, and I was uncomfortable about sharing it just because it was so traumatic to me and to the family.” He went on to say: “I am on this road to recovery, I am feeling better, I am getting up, I am moving around. I [thought that I] could share this and maybe it could help other people.”

While recovering and going through everything that he did, Ryan Lochte also had a lot of time to reflect. He had a lot of moments for introspection, and they appear to have done him some good.

Lochte added: “If you try to just better yourself every day and just keep moving forward and not dwell on the past and just learn from it, no one’s going to stop you. You’re going to be unstoppable.”

Ryan Lochte has come a long way from being what he described as “basically a vegetable.” So, despite this tragedy that befell him, the fact that he made it to the other side of all of this is a miracle in and of itself.
