Kelly Clarkson In Shock Over ‘American Idol’ Anniversary

Singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson was in absolute shock over her American Idol anniversary. The mother of two was the first winner of the hit reality singing competition in 2002. Yet, she has so much going on in her life that the anniversary of her win almost slipped right past her. Keep reading to see how she realized the date was upon her.

In 2002, American Idol premiered on FOX with judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson. Competitors came from all over to see if they could win America’s hearts and votes, landing a record contract, money, and notoriety. Sometimes, it was better not to win but, in Kelly Clarkson’s case, it launched her career. She was the first-ever winner and beat out Justin Guarini for the title. Furthermore, Kelly performed her premiere single, “A Moment Like This” at the end of the episode. It was clear she was going to be a star.

Now, she has won three Grammys, sold over 25 million albums, was a coach on The Voice, and has a plethora of Daytime Emmys. She is entering Season 6 of her hit talk show which relocated from California to NYC in 2023. No matter what Kelly touches, it turns to gold. Since her Idol win, there have been several success stories such as Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino, and more. Carrie is even returning to her roots as a judge for the upcoming season, taking over for Katy Perry who departed at the end of last year.

In an interesting twist, it was just the anniversary of Kelly’s win on Tuesday, September 4th, 2024. However, Kelly Clarkson has been so busy preparing for the new season of her hit talk show that she completely forgot. According to People, it was a staffer named Andy who reminded her. Andy said:

“Hey Kel, it’s September 4th.”

She seemingly and hilariously had no idea what that even meant when she replied:

“It is September 4th.”

Andy then added:

“On this day 22 years ago…”

That was when the lightbulb went off and Kelly realized exactly what he was referring to:

“22 years since winning American Idol. You know what? And I’m back on TV. Who would’ve thought?”

A Special Moment

After fans saw Kelly Clarkson’s amazing reaction to realizing what day it was, Mean Girls-style, they immediately headed to the comment section. Many actually remembered watching the moment she won and where they were:

For Kelly, she was more concerned about her kids, Remy and River starting school. Now, she has a big distraction and a momentous occasion to celebrate.
