‘DWTS’ What Caused The Rift Between Derek & Julianne Hough?
Professional dancers Derek and Julianne Hough no longer compete on Dancing With The Stars. However, they’re still involved. Today, Derek is the head judge while Julianne serves as the cohost along with Alfonso Ribeiro.
But just like any other pair of siblings, they butt heads from time to time. However, recent interviews seem to indicate that the Utah dancers have greater problems they need to work through. What prompted this rift?
Derek & Julianne Hough Are Working Through Their Personal Problems
As TV Shows Ace previously shared, Derek and Julianne Hough are in the midst of repairing their relationship. In December 2023, Derek’s wife Hayley Erbert became disoriented during a performance and required emergency medical attention. She suffered a cranial hematoma and required two surgeries on her skull and brain to save her life.
The situation was incredibly frightening for the family. In hindsight, Julianne admitted Hayley’s health scare prompted her and Derek to put aside all the negative feelings they had toward one another and start over.
“Something happens and it just is like a clean slate,” Julianne told PEOPLE recently. “Especially with what just happened with Derek and Haley, there could have been little things just kind of looming or lingering in the background, but when you’re left with life-or-death situations, nothing else matters. Whatever little things of competition there are or whatever it might be, those things just go away.”
The DWTS hostess added that she feels incredibly blessed for her family, even when they aren’t “all on the same page.”
“The thing that hurts the most is when we’re not connected,” Julianne continued. “And so sometimes you do the thing that hurts the most, which is remove yourself because you’re trying to protect yourself. So our family is like any other family. We have our situations and our s—, but our deepest desire is to connect. And I think we all really have a strong desire to make that happen.”
So What Prompted The Rift Between The Hough Siblings?
According to insiders, the Houghs struggle with sibling rivalry.
“Make no mistake, it’s always been highly competitive between those two,” an insider says, as per Reality Tea. “When one of their careers is going better than the other … jealousies arise. There’s been bad blood between them in the past.”
For example, the insider said that Derek would rather be the host than head judge, but Julianne got the job instead.

On top of that, the insider alleges there was an awkward situation at Derek’s wedding in 2023. He asked Julianne’s ex-husband Brooks Laich to be a groomsman in the wedding, which ruffled her feathers. Julianne maintained that she and Brooks have a positive relationship. But even so, it probably brought up bad feelings to see her ex included in her brother’s wedding.
“It’s like [the Hough siblings] put up a wall between them,” the insider reportedly shared. “But to their credit, they’re working on it, really trying to be friends even more than blood relatives.”
