Julianne Hough Clarifies Sexuality After Identifying As ‘Not Straight’
Dancing With The Stars hostess Julianne Hough previously confirmed she isn’t straight. But at the time, she didn’t elaborate on her sexuality.
In a new interview, she’s shedding light on the situation and digging into what “not straight” means to her.
Julianne Hough Doesn’t Want To Label Her Sexuality
Like many other members of the LGBTQ+ community, Julianne Hough isn’t interested in labeling her sexuality. She understands that she isn’t straight. However, she’s more focused on a person’s heart when it comes to romance.
“Coming out is one of the most vulnerable and empowering things that you can do,” the 36-year-old shared on the Jamie Kern Lima podcast. “I think for me, it was very much like, it’s not about being straight or gay or bi or queer. It’s more about, I think I’m just learning like what love is and I love people and I don’t know what I’m attracted to, but I choose you.”
“I was starting to see people and seeing their hearts and seeing their beauty and their essence coming through in a way that I was like, wow, I love people and I don’t know if it’s a sexual attraction or a ‘this’ attraction, but I’m just seeing people. And that was such a beautiful revelation too,” Julianne added.

“I [told him], ‘You know I’m not straight, right?’ And he was like, ‘I’m sorry, what?’ I was like, ‘I’m not. But I choose to be with you,’” Julianne said in a previous interview with Women’s Health back in 2019. “I think there’s a safety with my husband now that I’m unpacking all of this, and there’s no fear of voicing things that I’ve been afraid to admit or that I’ve had shame or guilt about because of what I’ve been told or how I was raised.”
At the end of the day, the dancer’s fans are glad she’s happy being her true self. Coming out is an incredibly difficult process, but it seems like she has the love and support she needs to thrive.
Julianne Hough will return to Dancing With The Stars to cohost alongside Alfonso Ribeiro this fall. Catch the Season 33 premiere at 8 PM Eastern time on Tuesday, September 17 on ABC.
