‘Masked Singer’ Nicole Scherzinger Says She Was ‘Discarded’
Nicole Scherzinger has left The Masked Singer. She wasn’t on the show last season because of a play she was starring in. She also didn’t return this season and has announced a new reality competition show she will appear on. However, her biggest news is her first role in a Broadway musical.
In an interview promoting the musical, Nicole opened up about her feelings that her industry had “discarded” her.
Nicole Scherzinger Says Her Industry Discarded Her
Nicole Scherzinger is preparing for a new role in a Broadway musical. This is her first chance on Broadway, and she seems excited about the possibility. She has been interviewing for the role, and in a recent discussion, she said she relates to the role because her industry “discarded” her.
That role is Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. This is the same role for which she left The Masked Singer when she performed in London in 2023. Now that the play has transferred to Broadway, it is something that Nicole said she has always dreamed of.
“It’s always been my lifelong dream to go to Broadway,” Nicole told Andrew Lloyd Webber, her director in Sunset Boulevard (via PEOPLE). “Can you believe I’ve never been to Broadway? I always say I’m the greatest thing to never happen to Broadway.”
Nicole plays Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who wants to return to Hollywood but has “aged out.” According to Nicole, she relates.
“I’m [46] years old,” she said. “I’ve never been more strong — physically, mentally, emotionally. I’m in my prime. There is no better time for me to create work that is meaningful in this world. You’re so fully, have so much to give, and people have discarded you, and dismissed you and said ‘Your time’s up.'”
Nicole Scherzinger Preparing For Broadway Debut
Most people know about Sunset Boulevard from the Billy Wilder movie. Gloria Swanson played Norma Desmond in that movie, and she made the role iconic. Now, Nicole Scherzinger gets to show America how she made the character her own.
Sunset Boulevard is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is based on the movie in which Norman Desmond lives in her decayed mansion in Los Angeles. When she meets a young screenwriter, she sees a way back to the big screen. However, romance and tragedy follow.
She also has an incredible composer and producer for the musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber has won an Oscar (from Evita), four Grammys (Evita, Cats, Requiem, and a Grammy Legend Award), an Emmy (Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert), and seven Tonys. The Tonys awarded him the Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre honor in 2018.
Sunset Boulevard begins performances at the St. James Theatre in New York City on Sept. 28 before an official opening on Oct. 20.
