Viewers may think that making the USA Olympic team comes with a fat paycheck. Recently, a pro volleyball player for Team USA dished on the shocking way he and his teammates make ends meet. So, what did pro Erik Shoji have to say?

Some American Olympians Make Big Bucks

Without question, some American Olympic athletes bring in the big bucks. A lot of this has to do with pro NBA players making the roster for American basketball, for example. However, even athletes who are not part of a pro league also make big bucks through brand endorsements and more.

As one example, despite retiring in 2016, swimmer Michael Phelps has an impressive estimated net worth of $100M. Before securing more gold and glory at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, Simone Biles had an estimated net worth of millions as well.

However, pro volleyball player Erik Shoji, who represents the American team, recently got real about how much he and his teammates make, as well as how they do it.

Erik Shoji Reveals Harsh Reality Of Olympics

Despite the glamor and glory of being an Olympic athlete representing Team USA, according to pro volleyballer Erik Shoji, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. This is particularly true when it comes to making ends meet and paying your bills at the end of the day.

As much as it would be nice to rest on your laurels and accolades as an athlete, according to Shoji, the truth of the matter is that he and his teammates have to come up with creative ways to pay the bills when they are due.

Erik Shoji went on to tell his followers on social media: “The Olympics does not pay the bills. So when we are done playing in the Olympics like we did a week ago, we all have to find ways to make money and make a salary.”
