Michael Oher Explains ‘The Blind Side’ Lawsuit
Michael Oher, the football player whose life story is featured in the movie The Blind Side, is suing the family that took him in as a teen. However, Oher says his lawsuit against Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy isn’t about money, as he said he is worth millions.
Here is why Oher said he is really suing the couple.
Michael Oher Suing Sean And Leigh Anne Tuohy
Michael Oher filed a lawsuit a year ago against Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the couple who took him in during high school. Thanks to the suit, he was able to end their conservatorship. He also alleges they lied about adopting him and made millions off his name.
However, Oher said the lawsuit was not about the money. He said he has his own money (via The New York Times). “I worked hard for that moment when I was done playing, and saved my money so I could enjoy the time,” he said. “I’ve got millions of dollars. I’m fine.”
During his time in the NFL, Oher’s contracts totaled $34 million.
The Blind Side movie brought in $309.2 million at the box office. It should be noted that it is not the profit. The movie cost $29 million and then had tens of millions of dollars in advertising costs. Also, the Tuohys only received some of the profits.
Sandra Bullock also won an Oscar and Golden Globe for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy. With that said, Oher said that the story was mostly fictional.
Michael Oher’s Reasons For Suing After The Blind Side
The movie was based on Michael Lewis’s novel of the same name. However, Oher said the story painted a painful and inaccurate “narrative” of him. In the lawsuit, Oher said the Tuohys agreed to the distribution of the proceeds from the book and movie while he was still playing in the NFL.
Mr. Oher received and accepted one-fifth (1/5) of the total payments through 2016; subsequently, his share has been deposited into an account for the benefit of his son,” the legal documents read (via PEOPLE).
Oher said it was great living with the Tuohys because they had money, bought him clothes, hired a tutor, and gave him a bed to sleep on. They even got him his first truck. However, he still dislikes the fact that the book and movie made him look “dumb.”
The lawsuit came after Oher retired from the NFL. The Tuohys established a conservatorship over Oher, granting them control over his finances and major life decisions. The problem is that he had no disabilities, which is required by Tennessee law. Oher said he believed he was signing adoption papers, but the couple never adopted him and had him sign the conservatorship instead.
The Tuohys said they never signed any contract on his behalf during the conservatorship. One month after he filed the lawsuit, Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes dissolved the conservatorship.
