MTV recently revealed a shakeup in the scheduling for the 2024 Video Music Awards (VMAs). Now fans will have to wait longer to see the star-studded event on television. Not to mention, many people are questioning the new date and location. Keep reading to see why.

Fans In An Uproar After MTV Changes Schedule For VMAs

Initially, the awards ceremony was scheduled for September 10. However, MTV announced that it would now be taking place on September 11. The schedule change has been made to avoid competing with the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

MTV released a statement announcing the new date for the ceremony. “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night,” the press release reads.

Although the date for the VMAs has changed, they will still take place in the same location, at the same time. The MTV awards ceremony will be held at the UBS Arena in Long Island at 8 p.m. EST.

Fans are furious over the schedule change for one huge reason. The VMAs will now take place on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. They didn’t hesitate to let MTV know their feelings.

“Hey uhm @MTV @vmas: maybe you can move the VMAs to idk September 9th or 12th? This is so insensitive towards the loved ones who grieve over 9/11 victims,” one upset fan wrote on X. “If not, then at least have a tribute performance to the victims, whom you should honor. Otherwise, you’ll be just tone-deaf.”

They also pointed out that award shows aren’t held on other anniversaries for WWI or WWII. “My point is: it’s a solemn day we shouldn’t trivialize,” the person concluded.

Other fans weren’t impressed with the schedule change either. “Vmas in nyc and on 9/11 ????? great mix,” one person wrote on social media. Another person said they hoped that MTV would at least acknowledge the tragedy at the VMAs.

Other Details Revealed About The 2024 VMAs

This will be the first time the MTV Video Music Awards have been held on September 11 since the terrorist attacks in 2001. Last year, the awards ceremony was held on September 12 in Newark, New Jersey. Nicki Minaj hosted the event for the second time in a row. The host for this year has not yet been announced.

On Monday, August 12, MTV also revealed some of the performances viewers can expect to see during the 2024 awards show. Some of the most notable performers include Camila Cabello, Chappel Roan, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro, and Sabrina Carpenter.

Nominees for this year’s VMAs were announced last week. Most people won’t find it surprising to find out that Taylor Swift has 10 nominations. Post Malone followed closely behind the Love Story singer with nine nominations. Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, and Ariana Grande each have six nominations this year.
