American Idol Announces Carrie Underwood As The New Judge For 2025
When Katy Perry announced she would be leaving the competition show in February, rumors started circulating about who the new judge would be. Some people thought Miley Cyrus might take over. Meghan Trainor was practically begging for the job.
In the end, American Idol wound up choosing one of their own success stories to come back and sit at the judges’ table. Carrie Underwood first appeared on American Idol in 2005. She competed in and won the fourth season of the competition show.
Her win sent her into stardom. Since then, she’s had a successful career. She’s earned more than a dozen Grammy Awards, got her name in the Guinness World Records, and has even landed a Las Vegas residency. Now, she is returning to her roots on Idol.
The show confirmed Carrie Underwood as the new judge on August 1 via Instagram. Shortly after the news broke, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest took to Instagram to share his own heartfelt tribute.
He shared several throwback photos of Carrie on the show nearly 20 years ago. In the caption, he wrote, “It’s a full-circle moment to go from announcing you as the winner of @americanidol 20 years ago to now welcoming you to the judge’s table. Welcome home, @carrieunderwood!”
Carrie Underwood voiced her excitement in the comments. She wrote, “Thank you Ryan! Excited to be coming back home!”
There’s A Lot Of Excitement Surrounding Carrie’s Return To Idol
It seems that American Idol fans are excited about the choice of judge as well. “Couldn’t have picked a better judge! She’ll be amazing,” one fan commented.
Another person chimed in, “Oh this is sooooo wonderful. Full circle for sure and perfect for the contestants to see the possibilities of their future!” A third wrote, “That is fantastic! She is the perfect choice! Cannot wait to see the two of you, Luke and Lionel this season!”
Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan have both shared their thoughts on Carrie joining the judges’ table. Luke is looking forward to having another country music star on the panel. Lionel had some words of advice for her.
He told her that, whatever she does, she shouldn’t try to be like Katy Perry. “I want Carrie to come in and find her person out there, her person. I’m very happy they got Carrie, because… we want someone who is going to bring their light to the table,” Lionel said of the new judge.
It isn’t clear how Carrie Underwood plans to approach her new job as a judge on American Idol. Viewers will just have to wait and see what she brings to the table.
The new season of American Idol is expected to premiere in early 2025. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
