Suni Lee became a star when she stepped up for Team USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics when Simone Biles stepped out of the competition. However, there were some struggles this year for Lee, who still won two bronze and one gold medal at the Paris Olympics. In a rare moment, Suni fell from the balance beam.

The Olympic medalist explains what happened.

Suni Lee Explains Balance Beam Problems At Paris Olympics

Suni Lee was on her way to another great year at the Summer Olympics when she fell from the balance beam. This moment surprised many of her fans, but it wasn’t unusual. Simone Biles, the most decorated Olympian in U.S. history, also fell from the balance beam on August 5, and Suni has spoken up about what happened.

“It was really silent when you get up there,” Suni said after the event. “I don’t like that just because it gives me too much time to think and I can hear everything.” She then went on to explain that this causes stress for gymnasts. On top of Lee and Biles, Romania’s Sabrina Voinea also fell from the beam.

Suni went on to add:

“I like the cheering. I don’t like the silence. I don’t like it. I thrive off the crowd, so having the crowd’s energy, especially after you finish a routine, is really helpful.”

She noted that she could hear herself breathing, and her mind started to wonder if everyone else could hear her breathing.

Simone Biles agreed with Suni’s sentiment and said that the balance beam is always the most stressful (via NBC News). She added there is usually background music or noise, and it is a lot harder when it is complete silence. “We’ve asked several times if we could have some music or some background noise,” Biles said. “So I am not really sure what happened there, but yeah, not our favorite.”

No one from Team USA won a medal on the balance beam. Alice D’Amato (Italy) won gold, Zhou Yaqin (China) won silver, and Manila Esposito (Italy) won bronze.

Team USA Still Finished Strong In Gymnastics

Despite the struggles on the balance beams, the United States gymnastics team did great at the Paris Olympics. The United States won 126 medals, including 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze.

Suni Lee won the bronze in the Individual All-Around and Uneven Bars while Jade Carey won the bronze in the Women’s Vault.
