Tori Spelling Felt ‘Free’ After Dean McDermott Announced Divorce
Tori Spelling admittedly felt relieved when Dean McDermott made their divorce public last year. At the time, Dean was in a violent alcoholic spiral, and Tori was glad to go their separate ways. She recently opened up about the split, here’s what she had to say.
Dean McDermott Put Things Into Motion With Divorce Post
The announcement of the celebrity couple’s divorce was made on Jun 17, 2023. Dean McDermott posted the announcement on Instagram. He shared that he and Tori decided they wanted to go their “separate ways” and “start a new journey.”
He later deleted the post and apologized to Tori Spelling. She spoke about the ordeal on the latest episode of her podcast “misSPELLING.” Although the social media post was hurtful, Tori said that she was thankful he made the move.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum said, “He was reacting emotionally, and he was still drinking and, you know, he was in that spiral. But I gotta say, when I saw that post — inside, I was like, ‘Oh, thank god.’”
Tori, 51, said that she didn’t know if she could have done it herself. She didn’t think she was strong enough to make the move and break off the marriage. When Dean made the move for her, she was glad.
On March 29, Tori Spelling filed for divorce from Dean McDermott. They were together for 18 years prior to the split. In the court documents, Tori cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the breakup. She also listed June 17, 2023, as the official date of separation. So, Dean’s Instagram post really got things moving.
Tori Spelling Shares Feelings About Her Divorce
In her court docs, she also requested sole physical custody of their kids and joint legal custody. She suggested that Dean’s visitation rights could be determined at a later date. The former couple share five children, Liam Aaron McDermott, Stella Doreen, Hattie Margaret, Finn Davey, and Beau Dean. They range in age from 7 to 17.
Her latest podcast isn’t the first time Tori Spelling has addressed her reaction to Dean telling her he wanted a divorce. In April, she talked about how it all went down.
“I looked at [his post] and I’m not kidding you guys, I felt like this giant rock had been lifted off my chest,” she said on the podcast. “I could breathe deeply, and I was like, ‘Oh my God. He said it. He said it, so now I’m free.'”
Apparently, Dean threatened to divorce her “a million times” before the Instagram post that set everything into motion. Tori admitted she’d never threatened divorce, even though there were times when she “desperately wanted it.”
Once she saw Dean’s post, she thought to herself, “Now I can move on. He’s put it out there. Let’s go. Yes! I needed this.”
