The night before Richard Simmons passed away, he took a fall in his bathroom. It was his housekeeper of thirty-five years, Teresa Reveles, who tried to get him to seek medical attention. He did not do that and went to sleep. Sadly, the next morning, Teresa found him unresponsive and called for medical help. She noted that he was “happy” when he died and though it is hard for her to talk about it, she thinks it is important to honor him:

“No, I want to celebrate Richard. He died happy.”

She shared with People what she believed Richard’s cause of death was and it was completely natural:

“When I saw him, he looked peaceful.”

Yet, she noted how his hands were in fists, something that she had experienced herself:

“That’s why I know it was a heart attack. I had a heart attack a few years ago, and my hands did the same.”

So, what was it like being with the fitness icon toward the end of his life? Richard had stepped out of the spotlight for the most part but kept in touch with his fans via social media. He even shared that an interactive Broadway play about his life was in the making which thrilled him to no end. His daily activities included hanging out with the neighborhood skunks whom he loved to feed.

Teresa, who lived with Richard Simmons, shared that he would touch their noses as he fed them peanuts. However, she would warn him of their possible dangers:

“‘Richard! They probably have rabies!’ I would tell him.”

Still, this gave him joy so he did not stop. Now, one vital thing to know is that Teresa Reveles was not technically his housekeeper. There was someone else who had that job for forty years. So, what exactly did she do aside from warning him away from skunk friends? She shopped for Richard as well as watched over the upkeep of his home and the yard plus did the cooking.

Heartbroken

Losing Richard Simmons, who Teresa Reveles referred to as her “companion,” was extremely devastating. As she spoke about him during the interview, she would stop to cry:

“I can’t stop crying. I still can’t believe what happened.”

As Teresa went on, she detailed her life when she first joined Richard:

“I showed up in here and Richard says to me, ‘Where are your clothes? Where is your big suitcase?’ I said, ‘I just bring the little suitcase because I only try this for two weeks. If you don’t like me or you don’t like my cooking, then I can’t work.’”

He allegedly told her that she was never leaving and that they would be together until he passed. That prophecy came true and she was the last person to see him alive. He also liked to scare Teresa whenever he could:

“If I was in the kitchen and then I come into the living room, he would hide and jump out, being so loud that he would scare me to death. I’d start screaming, ‘Richard, you almost killed me!’” He’d just laugh and say, ‘Teresa, almost doesn’t count.’”

Richard’s brother, Lenny Simmons addressed their close bond, how “loyal” she was to him, and how much they loved each other. They were set to celebrate their anniversary in August but before he passed, Richard gave Teresa a diamond pin. It seems that they were soulmates and best friends.

Does it give you comfort knowing Richard had such love in his life and was never truly alone? Let us know in the comments below.
