Mark Harmon Reveals His Role In ‘NCIS: Origins’
NCIS: Origins will tell the story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his start in the NCIS branch. Of course, Mark Harmon played Gibbs in the main NCIS series for 19 seasons. However, since Gibbs retired, he moved to Naktok Bay, Alaska, and that is where Harmon’s character has been all this time.
As for NCIS: Origins, here is what you can expect from Harmon in the new series.
Mark Harmon Only Voicing Series Narrator
Mark Harmon will serve in the same role in NCIS: Origins that Jim Parsons did in Young Sheldon. Harmon will executive produce the show, and he will serve as the faceless narrator (an older Gibbs recounting his youthful days). However, Harmon will not physically appear on screen in the new series.
“I’m fine with the stepback role and [to] let the [new] cast do the work; I’m pleased to be part of it. I’m a distant part. I’m just here to support” (via USA Today).
When Mark Harmon left NCIS, he wanted to step back and do something different. He took a long break from any acting, but he has a return role in the upcoming sequel to Freaky Friday, where he will play the same character he portrayed in the first movie (Jamie Lee Curtis’s love interest).
So, while Harmon will be included in the new NCIS series when it premieres this fall, don’t expect to see him on the screen. However, at least you will get to hear his voice in the episodes.
What Is NCIS: Origins About?
While Mark Harmon won’t be on NCIS: Origins, the story will still be about the character of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The series starts right after his wife and daughter’s murder when he joins NCIS in California.
Austin Sowell (Bridge of Spies) playes Gibbs in the prequel series. The series will also have Mike Frnaks, who was one of Gibbs’ closest friends on the main series until his death (protecting Gibbs). Kyle Schmid (Being Human) will play the young Franks.
Robert Taylor will play Gibbs’ dad, Jackson Gibbs. Also joining the cast are Lori Petty as Dr. Lenora Friedman and Bobby Moynihan as Woody Browne. These characters have been described as this show’s versions of Abby and Ducky.
Mariel Molino signed on as Special Agent Lala Dominguez and is hinted at being a love interest for Gibbs. NCIS: Orgins will feature a younger version of Special Agent Vera Strickland, Franks’ old partner. It looks like Diany Rodriguez (The Blacklist) signed on for that particular role.
