RHOA alum Kim Zolciak has admitted to using the Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets as her own form of therapy. The show was filmed in September 2023 and that was a very difficult time in her life. So, what was the reality star and mother of six hoping to gain from her time in the Villa? Keep reading for more details.

Kim Zolciak Admits To Using Surreal Life As Therapy

2022 was the beginning of the end for Kim Zolciak and her husband, Kroy Biermann. Their Georgia mansion faced foreclosure in the middle of the year. Plus, Kim owed over one million to the IRS but somehow, they were able to save their home. Foreclosure and auction talk started up again in early 2023 but, again, they dodged it. However, the couple shocked their fans when they filed for divorce. Some were not sure if this happened due to their financial situation and if it would work better with them apart.

Unfortunately, the divorce was messy with both sides slinging allegations at one another. They did reconcile but that did not last long. Kim and Kroy were hit with more lawsuits, he lost his Rolls-Royce, and the police were a constant presence. Eventually, Kim did go off to film the Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets where she connected with Tom Hanks’ son, Chet Hanks. Now, the show is about to premiere on Tuesday, July 23rd. Therefore, Kim is speaking out about why she chose to do it.

According to People, Kim Zolciak says that, with all going on in her personal life at the time, this was very “therapeutic”:

“It definitely was therapeutic. A lot of the experiences, including the breath work, was a big one for me. I’m always on and I mask some of the pain and stuff with being funny, and so that was a really big moment for me. That was pretty life-changing. Just having that release was great and that’s kind of how we started off the show. So I was like, ‘Okay, I’m in. This is going to be incredible, the next two weeks.’”

It was also a great escape for Kim during this rough period as she needed an escape from her real life. Though she had never watched any of the previous seasons, which aired on the WB and VH1, she was more than ready to show her true self.

Finally Free

Part of going on the Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets was for Kim Zolciak to be completely authentic:

“My goal going on the show — which I’ve never watched an episode of in real life, and I intentionally didn’t watch any when I decided to join the show because I didn’t want to have any inhibitions — [was that I] needed some time away from the actual house to gain some clarity going through this divorce and focus more back on Kim.”

Fortunately, she had the backing of her eldest daughters, Ariana and Brielle Biermann, who have also been affected by their mother’s drama. Brielle, who got engaged in 2024, lost her Range Rover to repossession. Yet, Kim maintains the girls were happy to see her in the light and away from the dark. In the end, it was one of the best experiences of Kim’s life and she formed lifelong connections with one being Chet Hanks who could be a potential suitor.
