His real claim to fame was his debut comedy album. It was called The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. 

Most recently, Bob appeared in a short film, Once Upon A Studio. He also made several appearances on Young Sheldon.

In 2024, Bob Newhart’s net worth is estimated to be around $65 million. Believe it or not, his acting and comedy weren’t the only way Bob earned money. He also led careers in accounting and screenwriting.

More Than An Actor & Comedian

Before his life in the spotlight, Bob was an accountant. He worked for United States Gypsum, but that didn’t last long. Eventually, he moved into an advertising copywriting job.

While he was there, he and one of his coworkers would talk about what they considered to be unimaginable scenarios. They would tape their conversations and send them to radio stations. At one point, his tapes got the attention of Dan Sorkin. He introduced Bob Newhart to Warner Bros. Records.

Once he was signed on with Warner Bros., Bob started taking on the stage at various nightclubs. Then, he released The Button-Down Mind Of Bob Newhart album. The comedy album earned him two Grammy awards and gained him recognition in the world of comedy.

After that, he received the opportunity to have his own show, The Bob Newhart Show. This kickstarted his acting career. Many other shows were to follow, including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Big Bang Theoryand Bob, George, and Leo. He made his movie debut in Hell is for Heroes. 

Bob Newhart published his first book in 2006. It was titled I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This and featured many of his funny bits.

Since his passing, many people in the business have come forward to share their thoughts about Bob Newhart. Fellow comedian Carol Burnett wrote on X, “I had the great pleasure of working with Bob and being his friend. He was as kind and nice as he was funny. He will be missed.”

Judd Apatow also shared his own tribute on Instagram, “Bob Newhart was as funny as they come. The best stand up, the best situation comedy star, the kindest soul.”

Actor Mark Hammill wrote on X, “From his groundbreaking stand-up to his two classic sitcoms he gave us a lifetime of laughter. Truly one-of-a-kind. Thank you Bob Newhart.”
