Gay Golden Girls-Style Sitcom In Works Starring Matt Bomer

Over thirty years after it went off the air, The Golden Girls remains one of the most popular sitcoms to date. Set in Miami, it starred Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McLanahan, and Estelle Getty. They were four divorced or widowed women living together, experiencing life as fifty-somethings, with the exception of Getty. Her character, Sophia Petrillo was wise and in her eighties but still liked a good time. They went on dates, lost jobs, lost children, faced money problems, had AIDS tests, and so much more. Yet, they did it with humor, wit, wisdom, and most importantly, they did it together for seven seasons.

Fans have kept the show alive with merch and pop-up restaurants as well as plays, drag shows, and more. Plus, the series streams on Hulu along with the spinoff, The Golden Palace. Unfortunately, the ladies have all passed away with Betty White almost making it to 100. Now it seems that the magic is going to be recreated thanks to Ryan Murphy of American Horror Story fame. Along with Max Mutchnik and David Kohan who created Will & Grace, they are hoping to reinvent the show.

However, this Golden Girls will have a twist, according to TV Line. Hulu is going to do a gay version of the hit series called Mid-Century Modern starring Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane. Linda Lavin of Alice fame will also be a part of the cast and this is the tagline:

“As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”

Now, they won’t be in Miami but rather Palm Springs and gather after an unexpected death. That is how they choose to spend their golden years. The cast has already been mapped out and they are a friend short, as of now.

Cast Breakdown

Part of the premise is that “the wealthiest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper.” Fans of the original Golden Girls may recall that Blanche Devereaux (Rue McLanahan) had a gay cook in the pilot, Coco. However, he vanished by episode two but the show was very gay-friendly. Blanche’s brother, Clayton, came out in the series. Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) had a crossdressing brother named Phil while her best friend, Jean fell in love with Rose Nylund (Betty White).

As for the characters that Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane will play, Lane is Bunny Schneiderman. He is  “a successful businessman with one foot in retirement. Bunny is forever in search of love, but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it.” His mother, Sybil, is played by Linda Lavin while Bomer will play Jerry Frank. He is described as someone who “left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early twenties after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was a homosexual. Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense of the term, Jerry is pure of heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head.”

No word on when it will premiere but this is a heavy task for both production and the cast. They must make it clear that this is not a reboot but a show made in the style of The Golden Girls. Are you excited for the show? Let us know in the comments below.
