It is almost time for Shark Week again, and Discovery Channel has lined up some big shows and a great host to deliver the action. The event has occurred yearly since 1988 and always runs in either July or August. This year, the network has called in one of the better comedy actors working today to host Shark Week 2024. Here is what you need to know.

Shark Week Coming In July To Discovery Channel

First, the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week dates are locked in. The start date is a little early this year, as the first day will be Sunday, July 7. The week will run for the entire week, ending on Saturday, July 13. As always, Disovery Channel hosts the week, and there will be 21 hours of original programming.

There will also be a new host this year. It is a host that connects to at least two past hosts, so this is a fun announcement. Former WWE world champion John Cena will take the hosting job this year. In the past, another former WWE champion hosted the show with Dwayne “The Rock’ Johnson. Also, last year, Jason Momoa was the master of ceremonies.

Momoa starred as Aquaman in the DC Universe of movies. Cena stars as Peacemaker in the same DC Universe, so Shark Week keeps its connections with both WWE and DC Entertainment. Of course, DC is a Warner Bros. property, and that company also owns Discovery Channel. Interestingly, WWE’s main competitor, AEW, is a Warner Bros. property and will promote Shark Week on its programming.

“I usually do Shark Week from my couch with lots of snacks, but this year I’m beyond excited to host the week dedicated to the endlessly fascinating, action heroes of the Ocean,” Cena said (via TVLine).

What To Expect On Shark Week 2024

This year, Shark Week will air on Discovery Channel as usual, but it will also stream on Warner Bros’ streaming service, Max.

As usual, there will be a lot of shark entertainment on for the week. This includes the next chapter of Belly of the Beast, which the network promises will feature a “Great White shark feeding frenzy.” Monster Hammerheads: Species X promises a look at a potentially new hammerhead species. There is also a terrifying shark documentary called Great White Serial Killer: Sea of Blood, which investigates a shark that decapitated its victim.

Other shows include Jaws vs Leviathan, Makozilla, Sydney Harbor Shark Invasion, Big Shark Energy, Shark Frenzy: Mating Games, Deadliest Bite, 6000lb. Shark, Great White North, Expedition Unknown: Shark Wrecks of WWII, Alien Sharks: Ghosts of Japan, Monster of Oz, Caught! When Sharks Attack, Great White Danger Zone, The Real Sharkano, Sharks of the Dead Zone, Shark Attack Island, Sharktopia, and Mothersharker: Hammer Time.

The shark entertainment starts at 8/7c each night of the week.
