American Idol is desperately trying to find a new judge to replace Katy Perry after her exit. Keep reading to find out why Kelly Clarkson says it won’t be her.

Kelly Clarkson Nabs Another Emmy Award

Fox launched a singing competition in the summer of 2002 that would be one of the network’s biggest hits. Kelly Clarkson went down in history as the first American Idol winner. She is arguably still the most popular reality star turned singing sensation, along with Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood.

The show moved to ABC in 2018 and underwent a lot of changes. Ryan Seacrest still serves as host, but the judges’ table looked completely different. Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie joined the show as judges when it moved to ABC.

Kelly Clarkson’s life has also undergone some huge changes since she won the competition 22 years ago. Her music career has reached heights she never expected, including multiple Grammy wins. But surprisingly, she actually has more Emmy Awards than Grammys.

She’s hosted her own talk show since 2019. The Kelly Clarkson Show moved from L.A. to NYC ahead of its current season. The show was nominated for eight awards but only took home the Emmy for Daytime Talk Series.

One popular segment of her daytime show features Clarkson performing covers of songs from other artists.

Kelly Clarkson did return to reality singing competitions. She was a coach on NBC’s rival singing competition, The Voice, for several seasons.

Why She Refuses To Join American Idol As Judge

Katy Perry announced that she was leaving American Idol after the 2024 season. The show continues to look for a new judge ahead of its upcoming Season 23 airing next year. Luke Bryan recently weighed in on the search for a new judge.

But the one person fans would like to see the most has no interest in doing it. Why does Kelly Clarkson refuse to join American Idol?

The Kelly Clarkson Show‘s move to NYC was prompted by the singer’s desire to move away from Los Angeles. She moved to New York City with her kids, whom she shares with her ex, Brandon Blackstock.

Leaving L.A. meant leaving behind The Voice. She recently told Entertainment Tonight that she can’t join American Idol because it films in L.A., and she’s based in NYC now.

“No. No. I can’t do that, only because I promised my kids. I was like, ‘I wanna be there as much as I possibly can.'”

Kelly Clarkson is trying to spend more time with her young children and less time across the country. Maybe she will revisit the idea when her children are older, but in the meantime, ABC is going to have to find someone else to replace Katy Perry on American Idol.
