Meg Bennett Dies At 75
Helen Margaret “Meg” Bennett has died at the age of 75. The long-time soap opera star was battling cancer. According to the obituary from her family, Meg had been battling cancer and “lost her battle” on April 11 (via legacy.com). The family also said that Meg had been “working with children, writing, and engaging with her far-flung family and friends” up to the time of her death.
Meg leaves behind her husband, Robert Guza, Jr., her two stepdaughters, four grandchildren, and two siblings. Meg had met her husband while she worked on the daytime soap opera General Hospital and this year would have been their 20th wedding anniversary. Garza is a co-creator and writer who created the show Sunset Beach.
Meg grew up in Pasadena, California, and majored in drama at Northwestern University. She was the homecoming queen and also competed in the Miss America pageant. She then moved to New York to get an acting job and ended up modeling before finally getting her break in an off-Broadway musical (Godspell). This led to her Broadway debut in Grease and then to the world of soap operas.
Meg Bennett Soap Opera Career
Most fans today know Meg Bennett from her role on several daytime soap operas. In 1974, she started her long-time soap career with a small role in Search for Tomorrow, where she played Liza Walton. She then moved back to Los Angeles and got her most famous role.
Meg played Julia Newman on The Young and the Restless starting in 1980. Julia was the wife of Victor Newman, and the two had a big role in the show when they arrived. This included a storyline where Julia cheated on Victor and her husband kidnapped the man she cheated with and held him prisoner in his bomb shelter for an extended time.
Meg eventually left the show but returned and appeared as Julia off-and-on for six years, with cameo roles coming decades later. She most recently returned in 2018 for the show’s 45th anniversary and then again in 2020 in a storyline that honored Eric Braeden’s 40 years on the show as Victor Newman.
Meg then started writing and that became her career later in life. She wrote scripts for The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital, Santa Barbara, and Sunset Beach. She went on to earn five Daytime Emmy Award nominations for her writing, winning in 1995.
