Boston Rob: What It Would Take To Return To ‘Survivor’ & ‘Traitors’
Rob Mariano made his name as Boston Rob on the hit reality TV series Survivor. He then watched several of his former Survivor allies and enemies cash in on their infamy with a role in the reality show The Traitors. Rob recently said he would be willing to return to Survivor or try out for The Traitors. However, he said he would only do it on one condition.
Here is what Mariano said it would take to get him back into the world of Survivor or to attempt to win The Traitors.
Boston Rob Willing To Return To Reality TV
Boston Rob made his name on Survivor. He originally competed on Survivor: Marquesas, Survivor: All-Stars, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, and Survivor: Winners at War. He had his biggest success as the sole survivor on Survivor: Redemption Island. He also served as a mentor on Survivor: Island of the Idols and his wife, Amber Mariano, won All-Stars.
Boston Rob is the most prolific Survivor contestant in the show’s history. He has played for 152 days across five seasons. He also became a “villain,” especially when he turned on his friends and allies on All-Stars. In that season, Rob made it to the Final 2, but the people he betrayed on the jury voted against him, and Amber won. However, at the reunion show, Rob proposed to Amber and they married.
When asked if he would be willing to return to Survivor after his last appearance (Winners at War in Season 40), Boston Rob said he would consider it (via EW). However, there would have to be one major change to get him back for the popular reality TV series. Rob said he wouldn’t want to be a contestant again.
Boston Rob Wants To Do Something Different On Reality TV
When asked if he would return to Survivor, Boston Rob said he wouldn’t want to go back if it was competing again. He said, “It just feels like we’ve been there and we’ve done that.” This came after Parvati Shallow said she would never return to the show.
Rob said that if he returned, it would have to be in a mentor role, much like in Island of the Idols. He also said he would consider another role where he wouldn’t be eliminated immediately because of who he is. “I’ve always said it would take some kind of unique format change to make me go back and compete over there,” Rob said in the interview. He admitted that the contestants would gang up on him if he tried to compete again.
Rob also saw his former Survivor friends on The Traitors. Parvati, Cirie Fields, Stephenie LaGrossa-Kendrick, and Sandra Diaz-Twine competed in the series. Boston Rob said he was watching, and it was interesting. However, he said there would be a better chance of heading to The Traitors than back to Survivor.
“They’re having to deviate and adjust formats more quickly because the contestants are getting smarter and better,” Rob said. “So I was pleasantly surprised to see them doing that just from a viewer point of view because it keeps it interesting.” From the sound of it, Rob seems interested in the concept.

Boston Rob is good Television whether contestant or Mentor but the problem with including “game-pros” such as Rob is that they come out of ‘game-start’ with targets on their backs and don’t really have a shot at working up and implementing a decent ‘surviving’ strategy. If he and others are used as Mentors, make it interesting from the beginning. Have folks arrive on the island without an assigned tribe. This is to preclude pre-game maneuvering Then, use colored rocks to pick tribes and a separate colored rocks decision to assign a Mentor to a team. Whatever original team the game final winner comes from-the original Mentor wins a bonus. After the Merge, the Mentor remains coaching any of their tribe members still playing.
Finding idols needs to return to a simpler reward process. Once you find an idol it works completely from day of discovery- no additional task is required. But, perhaps each idol has an expiration date shorter than “reaching 6 players”. This would allow more idols to be released into the game so other players have a chance at locating one. Also, introduce a new idol- the “food idol”. This idol requires the player to enlist a second player to jointly discover the primary choice his team intends to send home next tribal. The “food idol” requires them to significantly influence a change in the selected person intended to go home on the next tribal council. Should they accomplish this (as observed/validated by the team’s mentor) the winner can choose a meal of their choice with their partner in crime at the Sanctuary.
