‘DWTS’ Val Chmerkovskiy Details Excruciating Neck Injury
Although Val Chmerkovskiy is the current DWTS champion, he was in a very different place last year.
The 37-year-old finished Season 31 in second place with his celebrity partner, Gabby Windey. Losing the Mirrorball Trophy is always disappointing, but Val was in for quite a shock when he realized his health was in jeopardy.
Now, Val Chmerkovskiy is sharing more about the injury that nearly ended his career. Keep reading to get the scoop.
Val Chmerkovskiy Reflects On A Year Of Healing
Although surgery of any kind is extremely frightening, Val Chmerkovskiy had a huge support system to rely on. His wife Jenna Johnson cared for him throughout his recovery. His brother Maks Chmerkovskiy and sister-in-law Peta Murgatroyd also live close by.
They fought through Val’s injury can came through stronger together as a family.
“This time last year I went through some stuff,” Val captioned his Instagram post. He attached several photos, including neck x-rays. Other images included Val recovering in his hospital bed, complete with a huge neck brace. Another photo revealed a large scar and bruising along Val’s neck.
He didn’t go into much detail, but it’s clear the injury was incredibly serious.

Instagram users felt relieved that Val made a full recovery. After all, he went on to win Season 32 with Xochitl Gomez.

Is DWTS Season 33 in the cards?
For the past few years, Val Chmerkovskiy teased that he’s going to retire from DWTS. Thankfully for his fans, he always seems to change his mind and head back to the ballroom each fall.
He hasn’t officially confirmed whether or not he will compete in Season 33. However, Val also feels invigorated and reignited after winning the Mirrorball Trophy in Season 33. At this point, it seems pretty likely he will return for at least one more season — health permitting.
