Is the hit game show, Press Your Luck, real or is it all set up for people to win or lose? This is a tricky question as viewers want to believe it is genuine. Yet, when contestants are shouting “no whammys,” is someone determining what will happen in the control room? Read on for more details on how legitimate the ABC series is.

Press Your Luck Real Or Set Up?

A big question when it comes to reality shows is what is real and what is produced. Clearly, there are several takes to get what is needed for entertainment value. So, does the same apply to game shows? That is a great question and the hope would be that it is completely organic. Then, there are shows like Press Your Luck where everything rides on a whammy. Essentially, contestants gain spins by answering questions. Then, they have to try to avoid the dreaded though comical whammy in order to win prizes. These prizes can be monetary or tangible like vacations or cars.

The anxiety and pressure levels rise drastically when the stakes are high. So, is a show like this rigged to keep people watching, or do whammys occur by happenstance? According to Distractify, there was a time when the game could be hacked. So, here’s a quick breakdown. The popular game show originally ran in the eighties. Then, there was a contestant named Michael Larson, who was an ice cream man by day. Apparently, he made studying the art of the show his job and ended up getting 45 spins.

This was unheard of and what was even more insane was he did not get one whammy, winning over $100K. What he learned was there was a specific formula on the board so he followed it and was able to play based on predictability. At first, he was almost denied his cash as it appeared he cheated but then the network (CBS) had to pay up. Press Your Luck has been rebooted with Elizabeth Banks as the host and things are different.

Tight Rules

Games are now played differently, especially Press Your Luck. The board has been revamped so that a case like Michael Larson’s can never happen. At the same time, federal law prohibits rigging of game shows so if this were to happen, there would be a hefty fine. Plus, it could lead to cancelation and that is not something anyone would want. The new version is bigger and better with prizes based on what the players want, like, and need in their lives.
