Arie Luyendyk & Lauren’s Unlikely ‘Bachelor’ Success Story
In 2018, Arie Luyendyk was dubbed the ‘most hated Bachelor in America.’ Why is his marriage to Lauren one of the franchise’s most unexpected? Keep reading for a look inside their successful romance.
Most Hated Bachelor In America
Arie Luyendyk’s season of The Bachelor remains one of the most controversial in the franchise. After proposing to Becca Kufrin, he had second thoughts about his choice. He broke up with her to pursue a relationship with his runner-up, Lauren Burnham.
He wasn’t the first to pull that move. Season 13 Bachelor Jason Mesnick ended his engagement to Melissa Rycroft because he still had feelings for Molly Malaney. He’s been married to his runner-up since 2010.
The difference is that viewers watched every detail of Arie’s excruciating breakup with Becca. He then proposed to Lauren on the After The Final Rose special.
It all worked out in the end, as Becca is now married with a newborn.
Arie and Lauren went on to marry in 2019, but when his season aired, GQ dubbed him the Most Hated Bachelor In America.
Arie & Lauren Celebrate Huge Anniversary
Former Bachelor host Chris Harrison officiated the couple’s nuptials in Hawaii. A few months later, Arie and Lauren welcomed their first child, their daughter Alessi.
Sadly, Lauren suffered a miscarriage with their second child. In 2021, the family expanded double with the birth of twins Lux and Senna.
The fan-favorite couple will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary this year. Arie took to his Instagram in November to share his gratitude for his family.
“So much to be thankful for, I love this life, our family and these moments. It’s been an amazing year,” he captioned a carousel of family snapshots.
How They Feel About Being Overlooked By Franchise
As one of the lasting couples from Bachelor Nation, you’d think Arie and Lauren would be touted by the network. Instead, they are often overlooked due to their complicated beginning. Does it bother them?
During an interview with E! News, Arie and Lauren were asked about being snubbed. Lauren said that they “really don’t care” about not being featured by the franchise.
However, they don’t have any ill will toward the show. She added, “We’re still are grateful and we love the producers that we worked with.”
Arie has previously spoken about why the format of The Bachelor doesn’t work. “It’s not natural to have two people that you [have], at the end, and then have to break up with one person and get engaged to another person an hour later,” Arie said on the Couple Things with Shawn and Andrew podcast in 2020.
While Arie Luyendyk and Lauren’s relationship started unconventionally, they seem happy together.
