While Simon Cowell has been open about his challenges, he is still in some ways coming to terms with the issues. Important to realize, that sometimes you can admit there’s a problem, but not know exactly how to face it. “I’ve suffered from depression over the years… but that was just something I just thought, ‘Well, that’s my character trait. I get down,’ and it’s something you deal with,” Simon Cowell told The Mirror’s Men in Mind podcast. Simon Cowell admits it is a weight off his shoulders that he started therapy. In many ways, he wished he had gone 10-20 years earlier.

Taking The First Steps

“I started to hear a lot more people talking about mental health,” Simon Cowell discussed his realization. “And that’s when I thought, you know what, I’ve kind of looked after my body, you know, through diet, exercise, whatever, pretty well over the years, but what have I done about my brain and my mind and all that kind of thing? And the answer is nothing.” He continued, “And now’s the time to do it. So it was almost like my head going to the gym.”

Simon knows that COVID-19 worsened his condition, even to the point of being petrified. He was on edge and the anxieties that the whole world was dealing with compounded for him. And while he could recognize he needed to tend to his mental state, he admitted he never took the idea of therapy “seriously” at first.  Rather, it took Simon’s friends sharing their own experiences for him to accept that idea as a way to treat his depression and anxiety. Moreover, he even confessed that during his first therapy session, he just told them he didn’t know how to start. “I sat down really embarrassed and I said, ‘Look I just don’t know where to start.”

Finding Compassion

While Simon Cowell began his therapy as a ball full of nerves, he quickly realized within 20 minutes he was opening up as if he had known his therapist for 10-20 years. And even though it was difficult to start, Simon Cowell says he has found a great sense of relief from going through therapy. He disclosed the session work has truly taken a weight off his shoulders. Since the AGT judge now knows the process he said, “Now I am happy to talk about it to encourage others too.”

Simon Cowell has reportedly made lifestyle changes to his diet, seen weight loss, and stopped getting his cosmetic injections. Addressing the root of the issues in therapy has created a ripple effect on his overall wellness.
