According to Variety, Clarence Avant passed away on Sunday, August 13th in LA per his family. As of now, the cause of death is either unknown or being kept under wraps. His children as well as his son-in-law, shared this statement:
“It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announce the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant. Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as ‘the Black Godfather’ in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports. Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss. Clarence passed away gently at home in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 13, 2023.”
Along with his involvement in politics and as Motown’s Chairman of the Board, some iconic performers looked to him as an adviser. This included the likes of Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Jimmy Iovine. As a career-defining moment, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Additionally, fans can find his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Sadly, he dealt a horrific blow just two years ago when his beloved wife was shot and killed when their home was burgled.
