‘Barbie’ Movie Almost Cut One Iconic Scene
Barbie, the latest Greta Gerwig film, is now out in theaters for audiences to see. It currently boasts a 90% approval rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a successful summer film.
Although there’s plenty to love about Barbie, one scene in particular really resonated with fans. But it almost didn’t make it into the film at all.
Which scene have fans fallen in love with and why did Greta Gerwig choose to keep it in?
Fans go wild for Barbie‘s heart and lighthearted fun
At its core, Barbie is a delightfully funny movie intended for audience members across many generations. In a nutshell, the film was created for anyone who ever enjoyed playing Barbies at one point or another.
Margot Robbie stars as the titular character while Ryan Gosling portrays her faithful companion Ken. The pair travel to Los Angeles to get help once chaos starts plaguing Barbie Land, where they live with all the other plastic dolls in perfect harmony.
When Barbie and Ken come to the real world, there is a scene where Barbie sits on a bench with an old woman. The pair lock eyes before Barbie tells the woman how beautiful she is. The old woman smiles back and simply says, “I know.”
Audiences connected with the scene, but Gerwig admits she was actually under a lot of pressure to cut it. Ultimately, she fought for it and it made it to the theaters.
“I love that scene so much,” Greta Gerwig told. Rolling Stone. “And the older woman on the bench is the costume designer Ann Roth. She’s a legend. It’s a cul-de-sac of a moment, in a way — it doesn’t lead anywhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, ‘Well, you could cut it. And actually, the story would move on just the same.’ And I said, ‘If I cut the scene, I don’t know what this movie is about.'”
The director went on to say that she firmly believes the bench scene is the “heart” of the movie.
The film has deep moments, but will leave fans in fits of laughter
Although Barbie has several deeply moving and emotional moments, it’s largely a comedy. Audiences will surely fall head over heels in love with Barbie’s journey to restore peace to Barbie Land, as well as Ken’s mounting identity crisis.
It holds a PG-13 rating from the Movie Picture Association with minor language and some suggestive innuendos. Ultimately, it’s a barrel of laughs and surely one of the hottest films of the summer.
