Teen Mom Leah Messer Mourns What Life Could Have Been
Leah Messer has not had it easy since she got pregnant at seventeen with twins. Her story was featured on MTV’s hit series 16 & Pregnant. She then went on to Teen Mom where she got married, divorced, had another baby, got married, and divorced again. One of her twins was ultimately diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, so it has not been an easy road. Now Leah is opening up to Teen Vogue about what she went through and how her life could have gone. Being a teen mom is actually a generational thing for her. Her mother and grandmother were both teen mothers.
For Leah Messer, she had a very different life mapped out for herself. When she was nine, she wrote a letter to her future self, five years from then. In it, she had hoped to be preparing to get scholarships and have a career as a doctor. That was all derailed when she discovered she was pregnant by Corey Simms. However, he was not her first partner as she lost her virginity at the age of thirteen. It was the first man (he was 18) that she kissed. Rather than have a conversation about being intimate at such a young age, Leah’s mother immediately put her on birth control.
It seems that Leah just wanted to find stability for herself and, ultimately her kids. Then, she got divorced twice but no one in her inner circle seemed that surprised: “No one seemed shocked, except for my family attorney. That is really what I thought was normal and what I thought was my destiny.” Prior to her second divorce, Leah shared that ten years ago, she was prescribed pain killers after an epidural went awry.
Making Good TV
Sadly, Leah Messer does believe that MTV used her addiction for good television. “You can see me high. Cut the cameras. You can see me falling asleep or whatever. Cut the cameras and immediately do an intervention…. instead of using it for the benefit of TV and drama.” However, production maintains they did what they had to in order to align with the concept of making a docuseries. Though Leah cannot go back to her younger self and share wisdom, she can ensure that her daughters are more educated. So, she is doing her best and doing whatever she can.
