On Instagram, Katie Joy of Without a Crystal Ball shared a video of Gil Bates speaking to a group of people. In the recently resurfaced video, Gil told a story about when his kids were younger. He explained, “I was at my house and my children were sitting around the fire and it had gone out for a while.” He said he was going to put more wood on it after it had cooled and the kids were sitting on it. The kids enjoyed sitting on it when it wasn’t hot.
Then, he explained, “But I put this wood in there, and let me tell you what. You have never seen how quick that thing got hot.” He said that one of the kids was “smart enough” and got off when it got hot. But the other child ended up staying on it, despite it heating up. Gil Bates explained that his son “rocked back and hit that main pipe where it goes out.”
Gil felt that the “alarm was going off” just before his son got burned. Nonetheless, his son stayed by the fire anyway. After his son was burned, Gil put a bandaid on his son’s skin, and “it just melted the skin off his little back.”
At first, Gil Bates felt bad for letting him get hurt. However, he realized that the alarm was going off and that his son had “neglected it.”

This video is from 2020, so it’s only a few years old. While it’s possible that Gil Bates’ views have changed, it’s not as if this video is 20 or 30 years old. Of course, fans agree that wouldn’t make it any better. Many are shocked that Gil would let his child get burned like this and that he would openly admit this like it was no big deal.
In a comment, Katie Joy expressed her disgust. She said, “What father throws a log on a fire when his kids are sitting there to teach them a lesson? That is so sick to me.” Others are calling it disturbing and disgusting that he wouldn’t warn his kids or help keep them safe.
