Harry Potter may be getting a reboot in the form of a TV series over at HBO Max.
It’s been nearly 12 years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 brought the film series to a close. To this day, it remains one of the most successful movie franchises of all time. Plus, it’s only been expanding since the end of the initial run of movies. Now it seems that the franchise may be coming back to tell the tales of the original books once again. This time in a series on HBO Max. Let’s discuss all the details that are known thus far.
A New Harry Potter
The whispers about this Harry Potter revival come courtesy of a Bloomberg report. The report claims that there is no final deal as of just yet, but it seems as though one is just around the corner. J.K. Rowling will apparently be a producer on the show, with someone else as the showrunner. The series would have each season cover a single book in Rowling’s book series, meaning 7 seasons in total.

The news about this potential revival has been met with overwhelming backlash across social media. There are multiple reasons for this. One is that J.K. Rowling has made herself a controversial figure via comments about the trans community. This has led to many boycotting all products with her name on them, regardless of her level of involvement. Secondly, there’s a general sense of “reboot fatigue” among many. They feel as though reboots are coming more often and the length of time between when a title gets a reboot or remake is getting shorter. Coincidentally, Disney announced a live-action Moana remake on the same day as this Bloomberg report. Moana is less than 8 years old.
The Wizarding World
The Harry Potter franchise has seen its ups and downs since the end of its wildly-successful initial run. The Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them series set out to reignite that magical flair of the original series. It was met with diminishing returns, critically and commercially, upon the release of each film. The recent video game Hogwarts Legacy has been a massive success, however. It became the biggest launch in the history of WB Games and sold over 12 million copies in its first two weeks.
So there’s clearly still interest in the Wizarding World. The product just has to meet fan expectations.

The remake Harry Potter series on HBO Max doesn’t have an official greenlight just yet. But now that rumors are swirling there will likely be more news shortly.
