Last season, fans learned firsthand how American Idol could give someone a golden ticket to Hollywood and then turn around and take the opportunity away after the fact. This year, they did it again, and it was an even worse look for the singing reality competition show.

Here is what American Idol did this year to a cancer patient trying out for the show.

American Idol welcomes back cancer patient for a second chance

In 2016, Avalon Young tried out for American Idol and did very well. The young singer made it all the way to the top eight before her elimination. However, her journey took a terrible turn in 2020. That was the year that Avalon learned she had incurable brain cancer.

Avalon wanted to make every second of her life count after that and she kept singing at occasional public events and on social media, never giving up on her dream to sing for the people. Late in 2022, Avalon neared the end of her chemotherapy and decided she wanted a second chance on American Idol.

She tried out for the show and impressed the judges. According to a recent Instagram Story by Avalon, Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie gave her the golden ticket to Hollywood – although it wasn’t an easy decision. This led to her getting ready to go to Hollywood, but she was cut in the first round.

This story had a worse ending than that. None of Avalon’s segments from her audition made it to the show, and they were all cut from the final product that people saw on TV. The story of a cancer patient overcoming the odds to make it to Hollywood ended without anyone seeing her on television.

American Idol can change its mind on golden tickets

In her social media post, she said it just wasn’t her time. However, this is not unusual for American Idol. Last year, the show had one of its most memorable auditions with Normandy Vamos. She came out with a carrot purse and used her high squeaky voice before delivering a great performance.

When Katy Perry claimed she was pranking them, Normandy offered to sing a different song, but it wasn’t necessary. She got the Golden Ticket to Hollywood. After this, she remained in the hotel and waited for the call, only to have American Idol call and tell her she wasn’t going to Hollywood after all – despite getting the Golden Ticket.

Normandy has since filed a lawsuit against the show for the way they portrayed her and for the fact that she was there for a long time, without getting paid, but they still used the footage of her to sell the show.

However, this time it was different. Avalon has been fighting cancer for three years now and she was good enough to warrant a ticket to Hollywood. The fact that the show cut her out completely seems beyond belief since it thrives on stories like these.
