The newest iteration of the Neverland story is coming to Disney+ soon. We just got a brand new trailer showing The Lost Boys, Captain Hook, and, of course, the titular characters Peter Pan & Wendy. This is the latest in a series of live-action remakes of classic Disney films that the company has done. But, unlike many of the other blockbusters such as 2017’s Beauty & The Beast or 2019’s The Lion King, Peter Pan & Wendy is going straight to Disney+ with no planned theater run. Let’s talk about the trailer and the cast of Peter Pan & Wendy.
Peter Pan & Wendy
The film’s director is David Lowery, who has previously done the live-action Disney remake Pete’s Dragon in 2016. He also received critical acclaim recently for directing the medieval fantasy The Green Knight in 2021. The trailer for Peter Pan & Wendy shows exactly what anyone would expect from an adaptation of the 1904 classic play. Wendy, John, and Michael are taken to Neverland by Peter and Tinkerbell. Hijinks involving The Lost Boys, Captain Hook, and Smee ensue.
It seems very faithful to the original 1953 film. The clocktower scene even looks ripped straight out of the animation. It doesn’t appear from the trailer that the film will have too much variation in terms of the story or the character’s personalities. Like the live-action Disney remakes of the past, this appears as if it’s going to be a fairly straightforward modern adaptation. It’s also going to be the first of these remakes launching on the Disney+ streaming platform. Mulan came to streaming during its simultaneous worldwide theater run as well. But it was a part of “premiere access”, meaning viewers had to pay extra to see the film, rather than it being a part of the regular platform’s free content. Peter Pan & Wendy, on the other hand, will just be available for free on its premiere date.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first live-action adaptation of Peter Pan, just the first done by Disney. Many are undoubtedly familiar with the 1991 Steven Spielberg film Hook starring Robin Williams as Peter Pan. A film of that caliber may be tough to live up to for this newest attempt at the story.
Ever Anderson will be portraying Wendy in Peter Pan & Wendy. If she looks familiar, it may be from her former role as a young Natasha Romanoff in Black Widow or it may be that her father is famous director Paul W.S. Anderson. Alexander Moloney will be portraying “the boy who wouldn’t grow up” in his first major film role. Perhaps the biggest name on the cast list is Jude Law from films like The Talented Mr. Ripley and Enemy At The Gates. He will be portraying the iconic antagonist Captain Hook.
Peter Pan & Wendy is coming to Disney+ on April 28th.
